Seat On The Korner: Nolan McLean

We select a Star of the Game and virtually invite him to take his Seat on the Korner — just as Ralph Kiner did on WOR-TV Channel 9 during the early days of the New York Mets.

Continuing the tradition of Rheingold Beer sponsoring Kiner’s Korner, this season every seat is proudly presented by The Main Event Restaurant & Sports Bar.

With locations in Plainview and Farmingdale, The Main Event features 80+ HD TVs, fresh daily seafood, and Black Angus certified steaks—so you never have to choose between great food and the big game.

June has been an up-and-down month for Nolan McLean, but he made sure to end it on a high note in Canada. The Mets young righty threw 6 shutout innings, giving up just 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7. While in many of his previous starts, McLean let opponents' rallies spin out of control, tonight he kept the Blue Jays in check, pitching out of two-out jams in the second and fourth innings while keeping Toronto off the board.

Need To Know:

  • The Mets are 17-26 on the road this season, even though 5th-best road ERA in the National League.

  • Despite scoring three runs tonight in a winning effort, the Mets went 0-7 with runners in scoring position. They are no 0-16 with RISP so far in this series.

  • The Mets will play their last in a stretch of 10 straight games on Wednesday.. They 2-7 in that span so far.

  • The Mets are 13-17 over their last 30 games and 25-29 over their last 54 games.

  • The Mets are now 11-9 against the AL this season, including 8-4 over their last 12 games against the league...Overall, the Mets are 313-309 all-time in interleague play.

  • The Mets have won 6 of their last 8 games against the Blue Jays since 2024, including 5 of their last 6.

  • Bo Bichette's 4th-inning single was his first against his former team. More importantly, perhaps, Bichette made a couple sparkling plays in the field, one to squash a rally in the bottom of the 4th and the other for the first out in the bottom of the 9th.

Turning Point:

One night after taking an accidental hit to the elbow, Mets DH Francisco Alvarez proved he was no worse for wear by breaking a scoreless tie with a long home run to center.

The blast put the Mets up 1-0 and they never looked back. Alvarez came into the game with the best lifetime batting average at the Rogers Centre (albeit in just 4 games) and now has 4 home runs in his last 9 games.

Three Keys:

Torrens Joins the Party

In the 7th inning, Luis Torrens proved that Mets catchers can hit a home run even when not DH'ing. His solo shot put the Mets up 2-0 and gave the team some modest, while much appreciated, room to breathe.

It was Torrens' second home run of the season, and his first career hit at the Rogers Centre.

Dream Weaver and the Rest of the Pen

As challenging as this season has been for most of the team, the one near-constant silver lining has been the bullpen, and the crew was at it again tonight. Brooks Raley pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning, striking out two batters in the process. And Devin Williams closed out the game with a relatively easy 9th, his lone blemish being a Luis Urias single. Sandwiched in between was a smooth 8th inning from Luke Weaver. He extended his scoreless inning streak to 24 and is now just 3 innings away from tying Mark Guthrie's twenty-four year old franchise record of 27.

A Better Baty

Mets second baseman (for tonight, at least) Brett Baty had a solid game at the plate. He got the Mets first hit of the night with a grounded double to right on the top of the 3rd while breaking his own 0-12 streak. He then gave the Mets an additional insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the 9th.
