Cinematic Ridiculousness: Mets losing streak reaches 7 in Philly romp

Updated: 3 days ago

Phillies 10 Mets 2 (Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, PA)

Mets record: 45-31

Mets streak: Lost 7

WP - Tanner Banks (2-0)

LP - Reed Garrett (2-3)

Seat on the Korner:

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Trea Turner drove in the run that gave the Phillies the lead for good in the 7th, but tonight would be a night for a two-fer ...

Bryson Stott's three run double turned a game still in reach to a laugher ... and if by laugher you mean two runs scoring at pretty much the same time like it was from a movie, then go ahead and laugh your head off at this 8-2 loss which extends the Mets losing streak to 7 games and puts the Phillies in first place by themselves.

Need to Know

  • The Mets lost their 7th straight ... the Mets last 7 game losing streak culminated on June 9th, 2023 in a 14-7 loss to the Pirates.

  • The loss snapped the Mets' five game regular season winning streak over the Phillies.

  • Zack Wheeler went five scoreless innings against the Mets, giving up four hits and three walks while dancing out of trouble.

  • Blade Tidwell went 3 and 2/3's as a fill in starter, giving up tow runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four.

  • Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil hit back to back homers in the 6th off Taijuan Walker to tie the game after Wheeler was pulled.

  • Jose Butto pitched two scoreless, hitless innings while striking out three.

  • Reed Garrett relived Butto but coulsn't get an out, giving up four runs on three hits and a walk. He has given up six earned runs in his last four appearances, and his ERA has risen from 0.68 all the way to 2.45 in 2 and 2/3's innings.

  • Nick Castellanos went 3-for-5 while adding a two run homer in the 8th to provide the cherry on top of the sludge sundae.

  • Justin Garza, who gave up the dinger to Castellanos, gave up four runs in two innings of work.

  • Brandon Nimmo and Luis Torrens each had two hits in a losing cause for the Mets.

Turning Point

Let's face it, Reed Garrett was the entire turning point, coming into a 2-2 game in the 7th and setting it on fire. It came to a head in what we'll call the turning point: Trea Turner's RBI double to give the Phillies a 3-2 win.

Three Keys

How It's Going

The Turner hit was just the beginning of a brutal, brutal inning for Garrett and the Mets. The Phils got six runs against Garrett and Garza to put the game away, and the last two runs of the inning scored milliseconds apart:

If you're wondering where you've seen this before, let's go back to 1989 where the team formerly known as the Cleveland Indians pulled off the trick:

That's how unprecedented that play was. I had to go back to a movie to find the closest thing to happen to what happened tonight.

A Theme Develops

The last two games of this losing streak gave us a disturbing theme: Games that started out where the Mets were on point against good pitchers, only to wilt with the hammer in their hands. Last night, they were hitting Spencer Strider hard, but they let him off the hook. Tonight, they started out against a wild Zack Wheeler, who throw 8 balls out of 9 pitches against Juan Soto and Alonso. But McNeil grounded into a double play to end the threat, and if you've been watching Mets baseball for the last thousand years, you knew that would bite them.

As it was, Wheeler wasn't quite himself but he was good enough to blank the Mets and keep his revenge tour going, striking out Juan Soto in a big spot in the 5th to end his night.

Oh, You Wanted Good News?

Well, Jose Butto's outing kept the Mets in the game for two innings.

And Tidwell, although his outing was short, didn't get blown out of the water. In fact, he looked halfway decent for three innings before the Phillies started to nibble at him second time through the order.

Otherwise, the Mets into second place with a thud that we could hear all the way from Flushing.
