Seat on the Korner: Luis Severino

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Today's "Seat on the Korner" goes to Luis Severino, who delivered a strong performance after a challenging outing on August 28th against Arizona, where he allowed four runs over 4.2 innings. In that game, Severino gave up eight hits, issued one walk, and struck out nine. Tonight, however, he provided the Mets with much-needed length, pitching seven solid innings. He allowed just one run on six hits, walked two, and struck out five, securing his 10th win of the season. Severino continues to excel at home, where he now boasts a 6-2 record. Over 84.2 innings pitched at home this season, he has allowed 28 earned runs, giving him an impressive ERA of 2.98. Additionally, he has issued 30 walks and struck out 63 batters in 14 starts at home, further underscoring his dominance on the mound.

Turning Point

The turning point of the game came in the bottom of the 4th inning, with the Mets clinging to a narrow 2-1 lead. The inning began with Jeff McNeil striking out swinging, after his at bat was extended due to a dropped foul pop error by Red Sox catcher Connor Wong. Starling Marte then grounded out, leaving the Mets with two outs and no one on. DJ Stewart started the rally with a sharp single to right, setting the stage for Luis Torrens. Torrens delivered a clutch double to left, which not only scored Stewart but who advanced home on a fielding error by Tyler O'Neill, pushing the Mets' lead to 3-1. Francisco Lindor then capped the inning with a line drive single to right, bringing Torrens home and extending the Mets' advantage to 4-1. This three-run rally proved decisive, as the Mets held on for a 4-1 victory, thanks in large part to their offensive surge in the 4th inning..

Three Keys

What The Buck ? Carlos has Mets 10 Games over .500.

With the win, the Mets improved to 74-64 on the season, marking a significant turnaround from their 2023 campaign, where they finished with a disappointing 75-87 record. The Mets are now a season-high ten games above .500, a remarkable achievement considering they were a season-low 11 games under .500 on June 2 with a 24-35 record. Since that low point, the team has caught fire, going 50-29, including a stretch of 83 games where they've posted a 52-31 record. During this impressive run, the Mets have outscored their opponents 428-347, demonstrating their resurgence and newfound consistency as they make a push towards the postseason as they pull within a half game of the last wildcard spot.

Young Keeps it Steady, Maton Closes the Door in Mets' Win

The Mets' bullpen played a crucial role in securing tonight's victory, with Danny Young and Phil Maton delivering standout performances. Danny Young was impressive in the 8th inning, tossing a scoreless frame to maintain the Mets' lead. Since July, Young has been a reliable arm, allowing just 3 earned runs over 18.2 innings, resulting in a stellar ERA of 1.45 during that span. This consistency has been evident throughout the season, as Young has not allowed an earned run in 26 of his 32 appearances. Following Young, Phil Maton took the mound in the 9th and locked down his first save as a Met. Maton continued his strong run with the team, having gone unscored upon in 18 of his 22 outings, allowing just 4 earned runs over 20.1 innings, which translates to a solid 1.77 ERA. Maton's ability to strike out 22 batters in that stretch further highlights his effectiveness, making him a key component of the Mets' bullpen down the stretch.

Bello Busters

Brayan Bello entered today's start on a strong run, boasting a 5-1 record with a 3.70 ERA (27 ER/65.2 IP) and 67 strikeouts over his last 11 starts since the beginning of July, with seven of those being quality starts. The Red Sox had won 9 of those 11 games, including 6 of the last 7, largely due to Bello's effectiveness on the mound. In his previous outing on August 28th against Toronto, Bello delivered a career-best performance, pitching 8.0 scoreless innings, allowing just 2 hits while striking out 9. This made him the first Red Sox starter since Chris Sale in 2019 to pitch at least 8.0 scoreless innings with 2 or fewer hits allowed. However, that trend came to an end tonight, as the Mets managed to score 4 runs off Bello in 5 innings, raising his ERA to 3.94 (31 ER/70.2 IP) since July, and snapping his streak of dominance.
