Edwin Diaz Melts Down As Mets Blow Game To Diamondbacks

Diamondbacks 8, Mets 5 (Chase Field, Phoenix, AZ)

Mets Record: 69-64

Mets Streak: L1

Mets Last 10: 5-5

WP: Ryan Thompson (7-3)

LP: Edwin Diaz (5-3)

SV: Justin Martinez (7)

Seat On The Korner:

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Today's Seat On The Korner goes to Diamondbacks' outfielder Corbin Carroll, who was the difference in this game. Carroll went 2-for-5 with a pair of home runs and five RBI, including the go-ahead grand slam against Edwin Diaz in the eighth inning.

Need To Know:

  • Reliever Dedniel Nunez was unavailable today and manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters after the game that Nunez is having trouble recovering from outings after his recent injured list stint. It is unclear at this time if Nunez will require a return trip to the IL.

  • The Diamondbacks remain the hottest team in baseball in the second half, improving to 27-9 in 36 games after the All-Star Break.

  • The Mets lost more ground in the Wild Card race after the Atlanta Braves completed a sweep of the Minnesota Twins earlier in the evening and now trail Atlanta by four games for the final wild card spot.

  • Eduardo Rodriguez was perfect over the first four innings against the Mets before running into trouble in the fifth.

  • Harrison Bader delivered his second homer of the road trip in the fifth-inning, a no-doubter of a two-run bomb to tie the game at 4. The long ball was Bader's 10th of the season.

  • Mendoza hinted before the game that the Mets would prioritize speed and versatility in a position player call-up once rosters expand in September, which could imply that top prospect LuisAngel Acuna could be in line to make his major league debut.

Turning Point

There is no other answer than the Carroll grand slam, which turned a 5-4 Mets' lead into an 8-5 deficit in the blink of an eye. At a point when the Mets can't afford to lose many more games, Diaz's failure to get out of the eighth cost them dearly.

Three Keys:

It's Not The Years, It's The Mileage

Luis Severino's inconsistent second half continued as he followed up a strong outing in San Diego with a clunker, giving up four runs in 4.2 innings of work to force the Mets to go to their bullpen very early. The Mets have seen Severino go 4-4 with a 4.91 ERA in 10 starts since the beginning of July, which could be due to the fact he has pitched more innings now (152.1) than he has in any complete season since 2018. This kind of performance won't cut it from Severino if the Mets have any hope of recovering from a four-game deficit in the span of a month to reach the postseason.

A Rough Week For Edwin Diaz

Two of the losses the Mets have suffered on this road trip came when Edwin Diaz gave up back-breaking home runs as he has hit a rough patch at the worst possible time. Diaz's command was off all night as he walked two batters before surrendering the grand slam to Carroll, delivering a knockout blow to a Mets' team that needed a lift from their closer. The result was Diaz's sixth blown save of the season, and the Mets have lost four of those games, which is the exact difference between them being in a tie for the final wild card spot and missing out entirely.

Sporadic Offense

The Mets' bats only came to life in the fifth and sixth innings against Rodriguez, who gave up all five of the Mets' runs in that span while recording just four outs. Rodriguez was perfect through the first four innings and the Diamondbacks' bullpen gave up just one hit over 3.2 shutout innings while striking out four. Maintaining a one-run lead against a potent offense isn't easy so a failure to tack on runs made it easier for the Diamondbacks to mount a crushing comeback in the later innings.
