Francisco Lindor Saves Day As Mets Score Three In Ninth To Top Rockies

Mets 5, Rockies 3 (Coors Field, Denver, CO)

Mets Record: 60-54

Mets Streak: W1

Mets Last 10: 5-5

WP: Jose Butto (5-3) LP: Victor Vodnik (3-2)

SV: Edwin Diaz (14)

Seat On The Korner:

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Today's Seat On The Korner goes to Mets' shortstop Francisco Lindor, who saved the day with a two-run single in the ninth inning to give the Mets the lead. Lindor went 2-for-5 on the night with a run scored and the aforementioned two RBI to provide a spark for the slumbering lineup in a game the Mets needed to grab.

Need To Know

  • Jose Butto tossed two scoreless innings of relief to pick up his fifth win of the season.

  • Mets' starter Paul Blackburn delivered his second consecutive quality start, allowing just two runs in six innings while striking out six batters.

  • Rockies' starter Ryan Feltner was removed from the game after allowing one run on 24 pitches in the first inning. Colorado did not provide on Feltner's status during the game.

  • Edwin Diaz recorded his first save since July 30th by allowing one run in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win.

  • The Mets gained a game on the Atlanta Braves in the Wild Card standings after the Braves dropped their fourth straight game tonight. New York will end the night just one-half game out of the final Wild Card spot in the National League.

  • Starling Marte began a rehab assignment this afternoon with Low-A St. Lucie and went 1-for-3 with a hit and a stolen base.

Turning Point

The turning point tonight was very easy. With the bases loaded and one out in the top of the ninth inning, Lindor's two-run single off Victor Vodnik gave the Mets a lead they would never relinquish in a game they couldn't afford to lose.

Three Keys:

Winker Wakes Up

The Mets haven't gotten much bang from their buck in their trade for Jesse Winker, who entered the day with just three hits in 15 at bats since coming over from Washington. Winker broke out in a big way tonight, going 3-for-5 with an RBI single in the ninth inning to extend the Mets' lead to 5-2, perhaps offering hope that this performance will get him going.

Improving Clutch Performance

Much has been made about the Mets' slump with runners in scoring position since the All-Star Break as their performance in that department ranked only above the San Francisco Giants and Chicago White Sox. The Mets did fare better tonight in clutch situations, going 4-for-10 with runners in scoring position with Winker and Pete Alonso cashing in with two outs to boot. While the Mets would like to get more out of their bats during a visit to hitter-friendly Coors Field, this performance is definitely one to build on going forward.

Emptying The Pen

The injury to Feltner forced Colorado's bullpen to work eight innings tonight, which could be costly for the Rockies with a day game looming tomorrow. While Noah Davis did yeoman's work to absorb four innings of one-run ball, Colorado still needed to use six other pitchers to get through the game, meaning their bullpen should be very tired with the quick turnaround. If the Mets can get to Austin Gomber early tomorrow and force the Rockies to have another quick hook they have an outstanding chance to secure a series victory.
