Sometimes you just gotta tip your hat to the other guy. Cam Schlittler came into this game preceded by plenty of hype, and he lived up to it. The American League Cy Young Award (and apparently MVP?) candidate threw 6 innings of 1-hit ball, walking 2 and striking out 8. Schlittler's day ended after taking a Bo Bichette liner off his leg to end the 6th inning. However, he was already at 94 pitches, and there were no reports of injury postgame, so he was likely coming out anyway. This was Schlittler's AL-leading 8th scoreless start of the season. He's done some more impressive things this year, but I think we can be done praising the other guy. Suffice it to say, he was as advertised today, which was unfortunate for the Mets and for Christian Scott, who also proved himself a worthy opponent.

Turning Point

For this third straight game, the eventual winning team scored in the first inning, and for the second straight game it came on a leadoff home run.

Granted, a leadoff home run may not seem like a turning point. But when the winning pitcher throws 6 scoreless while only giving up 1 hit, it doesn't take much to turn the game.

In today's care, it was Yankees All-Star and today's designated hitter, Ben Rice.

The porch shot was Rice's third in his last four games, and his 38th on the season. There are only 6 MLB stadiums in which this would have been a home run; unfortunately for the Mets and Christian Scott, Yankee Stadium is one of them.

It's getting harder to remember that this is Christian Scott's first season returning from Tommy John surgery. The Mets 27-year-old righty threw his 3rd quality start of the season, going 6 innings, giving up 2 runs (on solo home runs), 3 hits, 2 walks, and 7 strikeouts.

On the season, Scott is now 4-5 with a 3.76 ERA, with 127 K's in 105.1 innings pitched.

The Return of Nate the Great

In his first appearance since allowing his first career earned runs on Wednesday, Nate Lavender return to from with a solid scoreless inning of work. Lavender faced 4 batters, walking one, striking one, and getting 2 fly out. The Mets rookie is now 15.1 innings (16 games) into his rookie campaign and has given up just 3 earned runs (1.76 ERA) while striking out 18, and has a 0.98 WHIP.

All Streaks Come to an End Eventually

After a rough stretch for most of August (.171 batting average, .462 OPS for the month), AJ Ewing ended the month with a 2-game hitting streak and expanded it into September. Coming into Sunday's game, Ewing had an 11-game on-base streak, during which he batted .400 (16-40) with 9 runs, 3 doubles, 2 home runs, 9 RBI's, 5 walks, 2 stolen bases, and a .457/.625/1.082 slash. Ewing had collected multiple hits in 4 of his previous 6 games, going 11-23 over that span. Unfortunately for him, Ewing ran into some tough Yankees pitching on Sunday and his streak met its end. The Mets rookie center fielder will look to start a new streak on Monday at Citi Field against the Orioles.
