Seat on the Korner: Justin Wrobleski

We select a Star of the Game and virtually invite him to take his Seat on the Korner — just as Ralph Kiner did on WOR-TV Channel 9 during the early days of the New York Mets.

Continuing the tradition of Rheingold Beer sponsoring Kiner’s Korner, this season every seat is proudly presented by The Main Event Restaurant & Sports Bar.

With locations in Plainview and Farmingdale, The Main Event features 80+ HD TVs, fresh daily seafood, and Black Angus certified steaks—so you never have to choose between great food and the big game.

Justin Wrobleski did what good pitchers do: take advantage of a struggling lineup ... and boy is the Mets lineup struggling. Wrobleski gave up two hits in 8 innings and was never in danger in a very easy 4-0 Dodger victory which sent the Mets to their 6th straight loss.

Need to Know

  • David Peterson made it through five innings, but he gave up four runs on five hits and four walks while striking out seven.

  • Justin Wrobleski's 8 innings marked the first time he has ever pitched more than 7 innings ... in professional baseball.

  • Sixteen Mets outs were made on the ground tonight. (Wrobleski only struck out two batters.)

  • Tonight marked Tommy Pham's second debut with the Mets. He, like most Mets, took an 0-for-3.

  • Craig Kimbrel made his second appearance for the Mets and pitched a scoreless inning.

  • Joey Gerber made his Mets debut and pitched two scoreless innings, including a strikeout of Andy Pages to punctuate the 7th inning.

Turning Point

Peterson struggled out of the gate in the first, He hit Shohei Ohtani, then went walk, single, walk before Francisco Alvarez and company calmed him down (or maybe fired him up) during a mound visit. He then struck out the side with the bases loaded to get out of the jam.

He was great in the 2nd inning as well, but in the 3rd he faced Pages with two runners on and it was over.

Nobody licks their chops at the thought of David Peterson on the mound than Angy Pages ... and that's saying something. Pages came into the game 6-for-10 all time against Peterson, and that's not even counting the playoffs where Pages is 2-for-2 with a HR against Peterson. Tonight, the back breaking homer.

Three Keys

Goose Eggs from Coast to Coast

The last time the Mets scored was Saturday. They had four hits against West Sacramento on Sunday. They have now gone 20 innings without a run, and it's the third time they've gone past 17 scoreless innings this season (which is 17 games old.)

And they had two hits in eight innings against Wrobleski, who didn't walk anyone tonight.

What's amazing about Wrobleski shutting down the Mets is that the Mets had an all righthanded hitting lineup against him, and he gave up one hit in eight innings. This was the guy they needed to get to with Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Ohtani going the next two nights. Ruh roh, Shaggy.

David's Discontent

At the start of the first game of the 1919 World Series, Eddie Cicotte hit the first batter he faced. Lore has it that it was a sign that the fix was in.

David Peterson hit the first batter of the game tonight. There was certainly no fix, but it was a sign that it was going to be a long night, as has been the norm for Peterson this season.

So when do we start thinking about letting Peterson work out his issues in the bullpen? The rest of the rotation has been good to great so far, and Sean Manaea has had some strong outings out of the bullpen. Maybe it's time for Peterson to figure out what has turned his career south since the All Star break last season.

Dodgers

Hey, remember Miguel Rojas? Yeah, he hit that home run in Game 7 of the World Series last year. Or did you not see it?

Well, his dramatics weren't that dramatic tonight, but he did go 3-for-4 including a double off Peterson, making him 8-for-20 against Peterson all time. He also made this tremendous play:

There has been a two-word phrase I've used a lot this winter and spring. The second word is "Dodgers", and I'll let you use your imagination as to what the first word is. This encapsulates why: On a night where Shohei Ohtani went 0-for-4, they get three hits from Miguel Rojas. They get a three run dinger from Pages. They screwed around and hit Freddie Freeman 5th (FIFTH!!!) and he goes 2-for-4. Oh, and they get 8 scoreless not from a Cy Young winner or World Series hero, but from Justin Wrobleski.

Over/under on the usage of my two word phrase over the next two nights: seventeen.
