Korner Konfidential — Mets Hot Stove Report: Day 5
Day 5 — Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Day one of open free agency came and went without the blockbuster — no Mets signing, no Skubal press conference, nothing but the sound of agents' phones. That doesn't mean the board stood still. The Mets ran a clever little sign-and-designate gambit on two young infielders, the qualifying-offer list became final at eight names, and the Skubal debate got a new wrinkle: some teams, it turns out, are scared of the medical file that comes with the record price tag. Honest stove work, sorted as always into what's actually being reported, and what's just being talked about.
🔥 THE BIG BOARD — Reports

The Skubal price meets the Skubal medical file. ESPN's Kiley McDaniel reported Tuesday that some teams are wary of offering Tarik Skubal a record-breaking deal because of his arm history — Tommy John surgery in college in 2016, a flexor-tendon surgery in 2022, and a 2026 procedure to remove a loose particle from his throwing elbow — for a pitcher who turns 30 this month. The word around the game, per McDaniel, is that Skubal lands either a guarantee in the $325 million to $400 million area, or a shorter, high-salary structure — something like three years and $150 million with opt-outs. His own expectation sits around eight years and $352 million. Read this alongside yesterday's ESPN report that the Mets are considered the favorites: David Stearns has never loved long deals for aging pitchers, which is exactly why the short-and-rich structure is worth watching in Flushing. One more flag from the same reporting: the Yankees are thinking about it too, and if they somehow landed him, they'd trade from their pitching stockpile. File that away — it matters two sections down.
Signed Monday, designated Tuesday — on purpose. Remember yesterday's re-signing of Christian Cairo? Add Kyren Paris to the same story, because both moves completed their second act. The Mets announced that Paris — claimed from the Angels days ago — has been signed to a major league contract for 2027 and designated for assignment, and that Cairo has been designated as well (MLB Trade Rumors). This is not the front office changing its mind overnight. Both infielders were headed for minor league free agency; signing them to big-league deals first lets the Mets try to pass them through waivers and keep them as non-roster depth on better-than-usual minor league money. Paris, who turns 25 this month, hit .274/.384/.458 with 13 homers and 24 steals between Double-A and Triple-A this year, but owns a .147 big-league average with strikeouts in 38 percent of his plate appearances. Cairo, also 25, is the all-glove utility man — .230/.381/.300 in Triple-A, 25 steals, no big-league appearance yet. We'll know later this week whether the gambit worked or another club claimed them.

The qualifying-offer list is final: eight names. Monday's deadline produced exactly eight qualifying offers at $23.15 million apiece, reported by Joel Sherman of the Post and confirmed across the wires: Randy Arozarena (Mariners), Jake Bauers (Brewers), David Bednar (Yankees), Ryan Jeffers (Twins), Brandon Lowe (Pirates), Adrián Morejón (Padres), Trevor Rogers (Orioles) and Seiya Suzuki (Cubs). They have until November 17 to accept or decline. Two names matter in this column: Bednar and Morejón are exactly the kind of late-inning arms the Mets' bullpen debate keeps circling — and now either one costs a draft pick on top of the money if he turns the offer down and signs elsewhere. The Mets, as we noted yesterday, had no qualifying offer of their own to extend. Among the notables who did NOT get one: Jazz Chisholm Jr. of the Yankees.

A Rookie of the Year finalist in right field. Not a rumor — an honor, and it shapes the winter. Carson Benge was named one of three finalists for the National League Rookie of the Year Award, alongside Cincinnati's Sal Stewart and St. Louis's JJ Wetherholt, with the winner announced November 9. Benge's case: .282/.346/.430 with 20 home runs and 22 steals — the first 20/20 season by a Mets rookie ever — and he finished as a Gold Glove finalist in right field before losing to Corbin Carroll. Nolan McLean, fresh off his Gold Glove, is expected to land just outside the final three in the same vote. Why it belongs on a stove page: Benge holding right field is one of the dominoes in the Teruaki Sato fit question we've tracked since Sunday.

Housekeeping. The free-agent pile grew again Monday night: Detroit declined Kenley Jansen's club option, making the veteran closer a free agent — one more name for a bullpen market the Mets are shopping in, though no Mets link has been reported. Ryan Mountcastle, Gary Sánchez and Leody Taveras also reached the market, and ex-Met Eric Wagaman elected free agency, as noted yesterday. Next dates: the GM meetings in Las Vegas November 9–12, qualifying-offer answers and the Rule 5 protection deadline November 17, and the tender deadline November 20 — all against the December 1 lockout clock.

🗣️ THE SPECULATION DESK — Talk, Not News
The prediction pages take their shot. MLB Trade Rumors' Top 50 predictions are out, and their number for Skubal will make your eyes water: nine years, $425 million from Steve Adams. In the site's staff picks, Adams and Darragh McDonald both send him to the Mets, while Anthony Franco takes the Dodgers. Enjoy it for what it is — informed guessing by very good guessers, printed here under the speculation label where predictions belong. Nobody has signed anything.

Three trade fits to keep an eye on. Rising Apple, citing league sources talking to FanSided, floated three under-the-radar trade fits for the Mets: Brewers closer Trevor Megill — yes, Tylor's brother, coming off a World Series and entering his final arbitration year — Texas lefty MacKenzie Gore, also a year from free agency, and Detroit first baseman Spencer Torkelson, a name linked to the Mets back in the Pete Alonso winter of 2024–25. Fits are not talks. There is no reporting that Stearns has called on any of the three; treat this as a watch list, not a negotiation.

The Rodón domino — a conditional, twice removed. Sportsnaut connects two dots from the McDaniel reporting above: IF the Yankees signed Skubal, and IF they then traded from their pitching surplus, the Mets should ask about Carlos Rodón. That's an idea built on two hypotheticals, and we label it as such — but it's a useful reminder that the Skubal race will move other teams' rosters no matter who wins it.

Beat Tweets
The beat is quiet on the timeline today. We swept the 13-handle beat roster — DiComo, Puma, Sammon, Britton, Martino, Gelbs, Ragazzo, Heyman, Sherman, Goodman, Albanese, Mastracco and Pantorno — and no news-bearing posts with verifiable status IDs surfaced since yesterday's edition. The day's Mets news (the Paris and Cairo designations, the qualifying-offer list Sherman reported) ran through articles and team announcements, and all of it is on the Big Board above with its links. We don't fabricate embeds; when the first big signing breaks on X, this section will carry it.
WINTER BALL & FALL LEAGUE WATCH
The stove isn't the only thing still warm. A small army of Mets — big leaguers, top prospects, and a few names only the true sickos know — is playing real baseball right now in the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Mexico and Arizona. This section stays in the Korner all winter, updated as the numbers move, because on the slow news days this IS the baseball. No newer winter recap had been published by press time Tuesday, so today's lines run through the weekend's games.
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC (LIDOM). The headline act is Jefferson Rojas, the Mets' No. 1 prospect, playing third base for the Gigantes del Cibao. In just his second game he went 3-for-4 with two home runs — the first a 401-foot shot at 106 mph off the bat, the second 429 feet — and both blasts are right here. Through his first seven games: .250/.308/.583 while learning a new position on the fly. Also in the league: Christopher Morel (Águilas Cibaeñas) is off to a .200 start with a homer, bouncing between first base and the outfield corners; Vidal Bruján (Escogido) is at .214/.343/.464 — and as of Sunday he's a Brave, signed to a minor league deal; infielder Eddinson Paulino is getting regular run at second; and reliever Ofreidy Gómez has thrown scoreless innings. (Baseball America)
VENEZUELA (LVBP). Francisco Alvarez gave Magallanes a night on Saturday: a game-winning grand slam in the eighth inning, 2-for-5 with five RBIs for the Navegantes del Magallanes. The big day lifts him to .308 with an .846 OPS in 14 at-bats this winter. He's sharing a clubhouse with Luis Torrens, who's been moonlighting at first base and DH (2-for-14 early; it's winter ball, folks). Reliever Joander Suarez has four appearances (5.79 ERA), and relief prospect Saul García is on the Magallanes roster. (Metsmerized)
MEXICO (LMP). Marco Vargas has cooled after his hot start — he's at .237/.293/.345 in 11 games for the Yaquis de Obregón, though the legs still work: four stolen bases, and his latest line was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk. Catcher Alejandro Urías has seen spot duty behind the plate. (Metsmerized)
ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE. A rough Saturday for the Mets' contingent: the Surprise Saguaros lost 11–2 and fell to 12–9. Peyton Prescott's fifth start went sideways — five runs (four earned) in 2⅓ innings, and his AFL ERA jumped from 3.68 to 6.52 across 9⅔ innings. Irving Cota allowed two runs in 1⅔ innings (ERA up to 4.26). At the plate, Boston Baro and Bruin Agbayani both went hitless with a walk; Baro scored one of Surprise's two runs, and their OPS lines sit at .778 and .440. The lines that still shine from earlier in the fall: Ryan Lambert (five scoreless, hitless innings, seven strikeouts, 98.7 mph on the gun), Brendan Girton (4⅔ scoreless) and Cole Mathis (.580 OPS, with a homer). The AFL wraps up November 14. (Metsmerized)
