Seat On The Korner:

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Francisco Lindor is the Memorial Day winner of the Seat On The Korner.
Francisco Lindor earned today's Seat On The Korner with the game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth.

Today's Seat On The Korner goes to Mets' shortstop Francisco Lindor, who drove in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning. Lindor has now delivered the winning run in three of the Mets' five walk-off wins this season.

Need To Know:

  • The Mets improved to 20-6 at home with the win today.

  • This marks the first time the White Sox have visited Citi Field since July of 2023, when the Mets won two out of three against the South Siders.

  • The Mets have won four straight games against the White Sox dating back to last season and have won nine of their past ten meetings against Chicago dating back to 2019.

  • Former Met Adrian Houser pitched very well against his old team, allowing just three hits over six shutout innings while walking one and striking out six. Houser was in line for the win before the White Sox bullpen coughed it up.

  • The Mets have now come from behind to win in 13 games this season, which is the most such victories in the majors.

  • Prior to the game, Mets' manager Carlos Mendoza informed the media that Sean Manaea will throw a live batting practice session on Thursday, an important step in his rehab process.

  • Mendoza also said that one of the batters Manaea will face is outfielder Jose Siri, who is progressing well from a fractured tibia.

Turning Point:

The Mets had their issues cashing in runners in scoring position all day, going just 1-for-7 on the afternoon. Even though he technically didn't deliver a hit, Juan Soto came through for the Mets in the eighth, tying the game with a sacrifice fly to send pinch-runner LuisAngel Acuna home with ease. Tying the game was all the momentum the Mets needed as they got through a scoreless ninth from Edwin Diaz and walked it off in the bottom of the frame.

Three Keys:

Sweet Relief:

The Mets were able to stay in the game thanks to some clutch work from their bullpen. Four different relievers (Jose Butto, Huascar Brazoban, Jose Castillo and Diaz) combined to throw 3.1 innings of shutout ball to buy time for the offense to come back. Even though each man walked a batter, the Mets' bullpen managed to strand all of their runners on base to keep the deficit at just one run, showcasing the quality depth the unit has built over the course of the year.

Tyrone Taylor Stays Hot:

While the top of the Mets' lineup has been cold in May, the team has managed to go 12-11 this month thanks to contributions from the bottom of their order. One of those key guys at the bottom of the lineup has been Taylor, who started the ninth inning with a double that ignited the game-winning rally. Taylor entered the day hitting .283 with a .742 OPS in May, which is plenty of production given the caliber of defense he can play in center field.

Mets' RISP Woes Continue:

The Mets' ongoing struggles with runners in scoring position is a source of frustration for the team and its fans with Memorial Day proving to be no exception in that department. While Lindor and Soto did generate runs with sacrifice flies, which is better than nothing, the Mets went 1-for-7 while RISPing and left another 10 men on base. While the Mets' pitching has enabled them to get away with poor clutch performance for a while, the bats will need to start carrying their weight again once the schedule toughens up by mid-June.
