Seat on the Korner:

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Today's seat on the corner goes to Giants' starting pitcher Logan Webb, who lived up to his reputation as an old-school pitcher with a suffocating performance. Webb used his sinker to perfection against the Mets, recording 16 ground ball outs over eight shutout innings to earn his third win of the season and improved to 3-1 in his career against the Mets.

Need To Know

  • Today's defeat was the Mets' third in a row.

  • The Mets have now dropped this series to the Giants, snapping a streak of five consecutive series victories dating back to the first week of the season.

  • Omar Narvaez snapped an 0-for-16 skid with a double in the top of the third inning for the Mets' first hit of the day.

  • Luis Severino retired the first 12 batters to face him before running into trouble in the fifth inning.

  • Former Met Michael Conforto broke up Severino's perfect game in the fifth with a pop fly single that fell in front of Jeff McNeil in left field. Conforto would come around to score the game's first run and is now 4 for 8 with three runs scored in the series.

  • Conforto also made one of the day's best defensive plays, making a diving catch in left field to rob D.J. Stewart of a base hit.

  • Severino gave up three runs in six innings of work, recording just the fifth quality start for a Mets pitcher over the team's first 23 games.

  • Francisco Lindor's 13-game on-base streak came to an end as he went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. Lindor also had a ball boot off his glove in the seventh inning that allowed the Giants to score their fifth run of the day.

  • Brett Baty snapped an 0-for-14 skid with a single in the ninth inning.

  • The Mets plated their only run in the ninth inning on a fielder's choice from D.J. Stewart.

Turning Point

With runners at second and third with one out in the bottom of the fifth, the Mets brought their infield in. Giants' outfielder Mike Yastrzemski took advantage of the situation, blooping a single over where Lindor would normally play to plate both runners and extend the San Francisco lead to 3-0, which felt insurmountable with the way Webb was pitching.

Three Keys

Offensive Cooldown

After scoring 19 runs during the final three games of their six-game winning streak, the Mets have put up a combined three runs over the past three games. Dealing with dominant pitching performances from the likes of Webb and Tyler Glasnow hasn't helped but the Mets appear to go as their lineup does in the early going.

A True Pitcher's Duel

This game was a true throwback with both Webb and Severino dealing from the jump. Severino gave the Mets six innings of three-run ball and deserved better as the Giants took advantage of some batted-ball luck with soft contact during the three-run fifth inning. Webb used the Giants' excellent defense to keep the line moving with a ton of ground balls and the game moved quickly with only one walk between the teams, which came from Webb in the eighth inning.

A Rally That Could Pay Dividends On Wednesday

The Mets made things interesting in the ninth inning, plating a run against lefty Tyler Rogers and getting runners on the corners with one out. The rally spooked Giants' manager Bruce Bochy into summoning closer Camilo Doval, who threw 28 pitches to finish out Monday's game, to put out the fire Rogers started. Doval needed just five pitches to record the final two outs on Tuesday but this appearance could make San Francisco's elite closer unavailable for the series finale with a quick turnaround for the getaway day affair.
