Max Effort, Luis Walk-off, Robertson Wins and Loses as Mets avoid Sweep with Win Over Dodgers.

Mets 2 Dodgers 1 (Citi Field, Flushing, NY)

Game 93 of 162

Mets record: 43-50

Mets streak: Won 1

WP - David Robertson (4-2)

LP - Nick Robertson (0-1)

Seats on the Korner: Luis Guillorme

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

For the second night in a row, we have to have two seats, Luis Guillorme had the walk off RBI double to give the Mets the win tonight. But we also have to recognize the outstanding job Max Scherzer did in holding the Dodgers to 1 hit over 7 innings.

Ralph would have made room for two seats tonight.

Need to Know

  • Today’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers moved from 1:10 PM to 5:10 p.m. due to weather.

  • The Mets narrowly avoided their fifth sweep of the season...The Mets were last swept by the Dodgers from August 13-15, 2021 at Citi Field.

  • This was Max Scherzer's second start against the Dodgers this season...In the first start against Los Angeles this season, April 19, he pitched 3.0 scoreless innings before being ejected prior to the fourth inning after a foreign substance check...Scherzer has made 18 regular season appearances (16 starts) against the Dodgers in his career...In those appearances, he is 5-5 with a 2.34 ERA (27 ER/103.2 IP) and has 114 strikeouts...When facing the Dodgers at home, Scherzer has pitched to a 1.88 ERA (9 ER/43.0 IP) in eight appearances (six starts), with a 1-2 record...Scherzer also played part of the 2021 season in Los Angeles...He made 11 starts with the Dodgers, pitching to a 7-0 record and a 1.98 ERA (15 ER/68.1 IP).

  • Max Scherzer has allowed 2 or less runs in 11 consecutive starts against the Dodgers, tied for the 3rd-longest streak against them since 1893. Only Ed Reulbach and Christy Mathewson have had longer streaks with 16.

  • This was Bobby Miller's first career start against the New York Mets.

  • Starling Marte stole his 24th base adding to his ninth career season with 20+ SB...Only 35 players in the Integration Era (since 1947) have had more 20-steal seasons...He has swiped 20 or more bags in nine of the 11 seasons since 2013...No other player in the majors has done so more than six times.

Turning Point

With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 10th, and Brett Baty as the ghost runner manager Buck Showalter sent Luis Guillorme up to pinch hit for Mark Canha, Guillorme behind in the count 0-2 shot the ball down the first base line for a double to drive in Brett Baty with the winning run

Three Keys

MAX EFFORT

Max Scherzer was outstanding throwing 7 innings of 1 hit no run ball, he threw a total of 97 pitched, 58 strikes, it looked like Max was in line for his 9th win, but some head scratching bullpen choices by Buck robbed him of his 9th win.

MILLER TIME

The Mets may have never gotten to extra innings and could have easily lost this game 1-0, as Bobby Miller misplayed what appeared to be an inning ending double play ball by Brandon Nimmo into a 1-3 ground out which allowed Starling Marte to come across with the first run of the game.

BULL (pen)

With the Mets nursing a 1-0 lead with six outs to get, and a fully rested David Robertson available, Buck went with Trevor Gott in a high leverage situation, Gott responded by walking James Outman, giving up a single to Miguel Rojas, giving up a deep fly to pinch hitter Will Smith allowing Outman to move to third and then gave up a game tying line drive single to Mookie Betts, Brooks Raley came in and bailed Gott out of a 1st and 2nd 1 man out jam by getting Freedie Freeman and Max Muncy out with no further damage. Not sure what Buck was thinking Robertson ended up working 2 scoreless innings including the top of the 10th ghost runner inning, but he should have been in the 8th and 9th !
