Seat on the Korner: Gavin Williams

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Gavin Williams entered the day on one of the best streaks of his career. Then he topped it with the best outing he's ever had. Williams carried a no-hitter through 8.1 innings before Juan Soto broke it with a solo home run. Williams was able to get one more out before a walk to Brandon Nimmo ended his day after 126 pitches. When all was said and done, Gavin Williams had pitched 8.2 innings, with 4 walks, 6 strikeouts, and the lone hit, easily earning him a seat on the Korner.

Need to Know

  • Juan Soto's one out home run in the bottom of the ninth was the first Mets hit since Jeff McNeil's single in the bottom of the 4th of last night's game.

  • While not at his best, Mets starting pitcher David Peterson pitched well enough to keep the Mets in the game, and provided some length by going 6 innings giving up 4 runs on 5 hits, walking 2, and striking out 7.

  • Brandon Nimmo walked three times, so that's neat, I guess.

  • The Mets are now 38-21 at home.

  • The first place Philadelphia Phillies lost to the Baltimore Orioles in their daytime affair, so the Mets remain 2.5 games out of first.

Turning Point

The turning point came in the top of the second when David Fry led off the inning with a home run to left. Following last night's letdown, the Mets were hoping to set the tone early. And while Peterson shut down the Guardians 1-2-3 in the top of the first, the Mets went hitless in their half of the frame (and in the following 7 innings). Potential momentum was then sufficiently zapped by Fry's solo shot to left, and the Guardians never looked back.

Three Keys

Next Stop, Milwaukee

Things don't necessarily get easier for the Mets, as their next series is in Milwaukee to take on the Brewers who have the best record in baseball. The Brew Crew will no doubt be looking to exact some revenge against the team that knocked them out of the postseason last year. For the Mets, a strong showing in Milwaukee (aka winning) could ignite more spirited play than they've shown of late.

Bullpen Appreciation

Not only was Peterson able to give the Mets pen some rest by pitching 6 full innings, but Justin Hagenman followed a Reed Garrett scoreless 7th with two scoreless innings of his own. The Mets bullpen will now come into this weekend's series off some helpful, and much needed, rest.

And Then There Was Juan

Juan Soto's 9th inning home run didn't just end the Mets hitless streak, it also ended his own 7 game homerless streak.
