Seat on the Korner:

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

We've been waiting for the "Juan Soto Game". Could this be it? Four hits, four RBI, and two homers which both put the Mets in the lead and provided the margin of victory in a game which stopped their longest losing streak in two seasons? It's say this is the first "Juan Soto Game" of his Mets career.

Need to Know

  • The Mets have ended their 7 game losing streak and are now back in a tie with the Phillies for first place in the NL East.

  • Brandon Nimmo's solo home run in the first tied him with Todd Hundley and Francisco Lindor on the Mets all time HR list at 124.

  • Francisco Lindor's home run in the 3rd moved him ahead of Todd Hundley and Brandon Nimmo on the all time HR list at 125. More importantly, it was his first homer in 16 games and his first hit in 21 at-bats.

  • Brandon Nimmo's home run in the 3rd made it back to back with Lindor, and tied them at 125 HR's.

  • Juan Soto's home run in the 3rd made it back to back to back dingers. Nimmo and Lindor teamed up with Jeff McNeil the last time the Mets hit three straight HR's in October of 2022.

  • Juan Soto's home run in the 5th gave him his 26th career multi home run game.

  • Jared Young's solo HR in the 8th gave the Mets their sixth home run of the game, the second time this season that the Mets have hit six homers.

  • Francisco Alvarez's solo HR in the 8th was the 7th Met homer of the night, and it went 452 feet off the facing of the second deck. It was the third home run given up by Taijuan Walker in two days. It's the 5th time that the Mets have hit 7 homers in a game, and the 4th time it has happened at Citizens Bank Park.

Turning Point

It's all about the streak ...

It wasn't just that this homer came with the score 3-1 Phillies in the second while Griffin Canning was getting tattooed in the early innings and Mets fans were dreading their first 8 game losing streak since 2018. But when Francisco Lindor hit a dinger, it pretty much ensured that the Mets would come back and win. This would turn out to be the 28th straight regular season game that the Mets would win with Lindor hitting a home run.

Lindor is now only one away from the record for most wins in a row while a player homers, as Carl Furillo homered in 29 straight Dodgers wins.

Three Keys

Soto Has Rizz

Let's let the highlights speak for themselves here. First, the HR in the 3rd:

Then the upper deck HR in the 5th:

And then the two run single that made the game as safe as it could be:

Top Of The Lineup To Ya

The top four in the lineup went 10-for-18 with 9 RBI (with the only other run being driven in by Young's home run.) Brandon Nimmo hit two solo HR's which on most nights would have gotten him the seat.

And let's not forget that in addition to his streak lengthening home run, Lindor hit a big two run double in the 6th to give the Mets some much needed breathing room.

Lindor, Nimmo, and Soto now all have 41 RBI on the season.

The Pen Is Finally Mightier

After Lindor's double, Canning gave up a leadoff hit in the 6th, and he was replaced by Huascar Brazoban, who pitched two scoreless innings to bridge the game to the Mets 8th inning rally which put the game away.

That shouldn't be overlooked as three run leads are nothing at Citizens Bank Park, and the Mets bullpen has had a 7.53 ERA since June 13. If that trend continued, it could have been another heartbreaking loss. But Brazoban, Ryne Stanek, and Chris Devenski (making his Mets debut) finished off the game spotless.
