Seat on the Korner: Rhys Hoskins

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Today's Seat on the Korner belongs to Rhys Hoskins, who continued to get under the Mets collective skins, this time with his work at the plate. Hoskins went 3-4 with a home run, 2 runs scored and 4 runs batted in.

Need to Know

  • The Mets are now 85-83 all time versus the Brewers, including 1-8 over their last nine games.

  • Luis Severino became the 25th pitcher to start a game for both the Mets and the Yankees. Bartolo Colon was the 24th.

  • Edwin Diaz pitched the 9th inning for the Mets, his first appearance since 2022.

  • Pete Alonso’s solo home run in the 9th inning was his first of the year and also his 499th career RBI. Since his 2019 debut, Alonso has the most RBIs in the major leagues.

  • The Brewers 1 through 4 hitters (Sal Frelick, William Contreras, Christian Yelich, and Willy Adames) went 8-20 with 5 runs scored and 2 RBIs.

Turning Point

Today's turning point occurred in the top of the third inning when Brewers DH Rhys Hoskins hit a 2-run home run off Mets starter Luis Severino. After Milwaukee took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, the Mets mounted a fruitless rally in the bottom of the frame, and then started to crawl back with a run in the bottom of the second. Hoskins blast, his first as a member of the Brew Crew, stretched the lead to 4. Perhaps more importantly, after yesterday’s dust-up between Hoskins and Mets second baseman Jeff McNeil, made a statement with his bat, as he continued to be a thorn in the Mets side. When Hoskins came to bat in the 7th inning he faced Mets reliever Yohan Ramirez, making his team debut. Ramirez threw behind Hoskins and was immediately ejected from the game. Hoskins ended up working out a walk against Jorge Lopez and was eventually stranded at first base. The Mets used the long ball to mount a late-game comeback, first with a 3-run pinch-hit home run by Brett Baty in the 8th inning, and then the solo home run by Alonso in the 9th. However, the Mets efforts fell short as DJ Stewart and Starling Marte each followed with strikeouts.

Three Keys

RHYS’S PIECES

Rhys Hoskins seems to torment the Mets on the field and in their heads, getting on base 4 times, today, driving in 4 runs and scoring twice, once on his own home run and once on a Luis Severino balk. He was also at the plate when Mets reliever Yohan Ramirez got himself tossed from the game by throwing at, or behind, the batter.

THRICE FOR BRICE

Brewers second baseman, Brice Turan, stole three bases on the day, including steals of 2nd and 3rd with Edwin Diaz pitching in the 9th inning.

URIBE WANTS QUIET

Brewers closer, Abner Uribe, motioned for the Mets dugout to remain silent after he struck out Starling Marte to end the game.
