Minor League Mondays: Bruin Agbayani Adds A Legacy Story To The Mets' Farm System
The minor league season is all but over for most New York Mets' farm hands, minus a select few who are set to head to the Arizona Fall League for additional development work. The Arizona Fall League is often used for players who either missed time due to injury or ones who could benefit from facing strong competition before the start of the next season. The Mets announced their list of AFL attendees last week and the most notable name on that list is deadline acquisition Bruin Agbayani, who is the focus of the final edition of Minor League Mondays for the 2026 season.
If the name sounds familiar, it should. Agbayani is indeed the son of former Mets' outfielder Benny Agbayani, who was a popular figure on the 2000 pennant winners. The younger Agbayani was taken by the Minnesota Twins in the sixth round of the 2025 draft out of high school and received a signing bonus of $380,000 to forego his college commitment.
The Twins got Agbayani's feet wet with a few games of pro ball in Low-A Fort Myers in 2025 with the idea of having him play a full season this year. That plan went up in smoke after Agbayani suffered a shoulder injury after just 10 games, sidelining him for most of the year.
Despite that shoulder injury, Agbayani's skill set caught the eye of the Mets when they were conducting their deadline firesale. Agbayani was one of two prospects to come over from the Twins in the A.J. Minter trade but the lingering effects of the shoulder injury allowed him to get in just three games for Low-A St. Lucie towards the end of the regular season.
While there is certainly some sentimental value of having Benny Agbayani's son in the Mets' organization we shouldn't sleep on Bruin's skills as a player. MLB.com rates Bruin as the team's 28th-best prospect, with scouts raving about his hit tool and above average speed. Agbayani won the Gatorade High School Player of the Year honors in Hawai'i in 2025 and has a chance to develop into a major league caliber second baseman in time.
It is hard to make a definitive judgment on Agbayani's path to the majors yet since he has so little playing experience due to the shoulder injury. Time in the Arizona Fall League should help Agbayani make up for lost time and set him up to play the 2027 campaign at St. Lucie, the Low-A level he has minimal exposure to at this point. Agbayani isn't going to be a big league consideration for the Mets for a while but it is still a cool legacy story to keep an eye on in the coming years.
