Minor League Mondays: Jett Williams Is Heating Up

The New York Mets' bats struggled over the weekend in the Bronx, leaving the team's fan base clamoring for more offense. While the big club has a strong lineup, there are a few areas that could be improved in the long haul. The good news is that the Mets have a wave of top young position players on the rise, including infielder Jett Williams, who is the focus of this week's edition of Minor League Mondays.

Williams, one of two first round picks from the 2022 draft, has always intrigued scouts due to his strong hitting tool. A major wrist injury short-circuited Williams' rise through the minors last season, but he finished strong in a cameo at AAA Syracuse and an appearance in the Arizona Fall League.
After a fully healthy spring, the Mets assigned Williams back to AA Binghamton, where he was assigned to start the 2024 season. The move was designed to give Williams everyday at bats at positions he was comfortable in and allow him to master the level before taking on more advanced pitching in the International League and it has paid off for Williams so far.
In 33 games for the Rumble Ponies this season, Williams is batting .291 with four home runs, 16 RBI and an .898 OPS in 117 at bats. Williams has been red-hot over the past month, hitting .307 with 13 extra base hits and a .953 OPS over his past 25 games, showing signs that he has begun to master the AA level.
Scouts have always been high on Williams' eye at the plate and speed, but his ability to hit consistently while showing some pop despite a small frame could be Williams' meal ticket to the majors. Williams is currently rated as the team's top prospect according to MLB.com and is 51st on the league's list of Top 100 prospects. The Mets have had Williams work primarily at shortstop, his natural position, in AA but he has also gotten a bit of work at second base and center field. With Francisco Lindor locked up for the long term at short, the Mets will eventually need to commit to one of those other positions for Williams once they feel that he is closing in on his big league debut. The next step for Williams would likely be a promotion to AAA Syracuse, which should come soon if he continues to hit like gangbusters for the Rumble Ponies. Playing for Syracuse would likely require some movement around the diamond for Williams since fellow prospects Drew Gilbert and Ronny Mauricio are at that level, with Mauricio also a natural shortstop and Gilbert making a case to play center field at the big league level. The fastest way for Williams to reach the majors is if he continues to hit, especially since David Stearns has made it a point to provide his top prospects an opportunity to play in the bigs if they earn it. There is an outside shot that Williams cameos for the Mets late in the season if he continues to torch the baseball, but the most likely scenario is that Williams will be competing for a spot on the 2026 Opening Day roster in spring training.
