Nothin' Brewing in Queens as the Mets Lose in Terrible Fashion to the Brewers

Game 78 of 162

Final Score: Brewers Mets (Citi Field, Queens NY)

Mets record: 35-43

Mets streak: Lost 2

WP - Colin Rea (4-4)

LP - Drew Smith (3-3)

SV - Devin Williams (14)

Seat on the Korner: Joey Wiemer

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Tonight's Seat on the Korner belongs to Joey Wiemer and honorable mention goes to Colin Rea. Wiemer hit the go ahead and game winning two run homerun in the top of the 6th to walk the Brewers into a victory over the Mets. Wiemer went 1-4, only hitting the home run tonight.

Also deserving of a Seat on the Korner, Colin Rea went 6.1 innings allowing 3 hits, 1 run on the Lindor sac fly, and striking out 3. Rea paved the way for the Brewers to not allow another hit for the Mets for the rest of the game. It can be tough facing against Justin Verlander, but Rea did it in fashion.

Need to Know

  • The Mets went 2-4 in their six game road trip to Houston and Philly

  • The Mets' singular run came from a sac fly hit by Francisco Lindor where Starling Marte scored from third.

  • Justin Verlander went 5.0 innings, allowing 5 hits, 0 runs, striking out 5 and walking 2.

  • Starling Marte's Stolen base in the bottom of the 4th was the Mets' 32nd consecutive stolen base without being caught, continuing a franchise record.

  • The Mets are now 22-9 when scoring first this season, they were 22-8 before this game.

Turning Point

The Turning Point of the game was easily the two-run homerun from Joey Wiemer in the top of the 6th.

After this, both offenses became invisible, only getting one hit from a single by Lindor in the bottom of the 6th and a walk in top of the 7th to Rowdy Tellez.

Three Keys

Drew Smith: In his first game back since his ten game suspension for "illegal substances", Drew Smith becomes tonight's losing pitcher after allowing the game winning 2 run homerun from Joey Wiemer in the top of the 6th.

Coming back from his suspension, Drew Smith was ready to move past the sticky situation:

Verlander: After going 5 innings and allowing 5 hits, but did not show classic Verlander tonight. According to SNY, Verlander threw 59 strikes out of 100 pitches tonight, drawing 2 walks as a result.

It has been safe to say that throughout the whole season, the Mets have not been getting what they are paying for with Verlander. Coming off a Cy Young winning season, Verlander has put up a 4.11 ERA, which is his highest single season ERA so far since his debut season in 2005.

Verlander expressed the team's struggles tonight after the game, saying "We gotta get going"

During the game, Verlander was charged with an automatic ball after throwing a warm up ball with 27 seconds left on the pitch clock. The rule is that the last warm up pitch thrown by a pitcher must be thrown before there are 30 seconds left on the clock. "It caught me off guard", Verlander said, as he did not realize how much time was on the clock.

What the Buck?: Of course, the main concerns have been with the decisions made by Mets manager Buck Showalter. Many are concerned with decisions regarding the bullpen, such as last night where Buck refused to put in David Robertson while they were winning. The Mets ultimately lost that game, having a terrible 9th inning, giving up 4 runs on 3 walks (2 HBP) and a sac fly.

Poor performance after poor performance, Buck still does not want to throw blame where blame is due.

Even with decisions such as leaving Daniel Vogelbach in down 1 run with 2 outs in the 9th, or even in the lineup at all, it makes fans and even players lose trust in their management. It seems as if the lineup is becoming more consistent, but decisions with the bullpen is what is causing these losses. If I were Steve and Alex Cohen, I would be thinking of making some changes...
