WP - David Peterson (3-2)

Seat on the Korner:

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

The Mets needed a horse on Saturday after their 13 inning soul crusher which exhausted the entire bullpen. Peterson, who matched his longest career outing at 7 and 2/3's innings on a night where the Dodgers could have really taken advantage of a gassed pitching staff, understood the assignment and gave a horse like outing against the defending champs.

Need to Know

  • David Peterson went 7 and 2/3's innings, one night after the Mets' bullpen was gassed from their 13 inning loss on Friday. He gave up two runs on five hits and two walks, inducing three double plays on the night.

  • Juan Soto missed a grand slam by about 18 inches, but his bases loaded two run double gave the Mets the lead for good. He would go 2-for-5 on the night.

  • Brett Baty went 3-for-3 with two singles, a double, and two RBI on the night.

  • Pete Alonso and Luis Torrens also had multiple hits, each going 2-for-4.

  • The Mets are now 18-6 at home, the best home record in the majors.

  • The Mets called up Jared Young and Brandon Waddell to replace Jose Azocar and Genesis Cabrera on the roster. Young started at DH tonight and was hit by a pitch to start the Mets' second inning rally.

  • Young was pinch hit for by Mark Vientos, returning from his abdominal soreness.

Turning Point

The honest to goodness turning point was in the bottom of the 2nd with the Dodgers holding a 2-0 lead and Tony Gonsolin facing Young with two outs and nobody on. Young just resumed a major league career which is now 23 games long, and his greatest success has come as a member of the Doosan Bears.(Shoutout to the KBO.)

Gonsolin hits Young, and it started a rally which culminated in the first Mets run on a Brett Baty RBI single.

Baty would have more heroics, which we'll discuss.

Three Keys

Shuffling His Way Back Into Your Heart

The floodgates aren't completely open for Juan Soto, but his two run double with the game tied shot a hole in the padlock.

It would have been a seminal moment for Soto had that gone out, and he missed by about a foot and a half. For now though, the Mets and their fans will settle for what was merely a very important hit which gave the Mets the lead for good ... his first extra base hit in close to two weeks.

The Brett Baty Heater Continues

The Mets are running into a great problem, as Brett Baty is forcing his way into the permanent rotation, if not a permanent spot in the lineup. He's hitting the ball hard, his bat speed has improved, and people are raving about his confidence level. Credit to Baty for not losing faith in his game, and credit to Carlos Mendoza for making sure of that.

DP, DPs, and Edwin

I can't rave enough about the gutty performance of David Peterson tonight. The Mets needed length and they got it from Peterson, who threw 59 strikes out of his 99 pitches. Most impressively is what he did against the top of the lineup. Mookie Betts 1-for-4. Freddie Freeman 0-for-4. And the Big Dog, Shohei Ohtani, went 0-for-4 with 3 K's.

Three double plays also helped ...

... as did Edwin Diaz, who came into the game in the 8th for Peterson and dotted the corner on a perfect fastball to Mookie Betts to end that threat, on his way to a four out save.

If the Mets can pull off the series win tomorrow night and then feast on the White Sox and Rockies, tonight will be looked upon as the most important pitching performance of the season so far, from Peterson and Diaz. When we look back, this might be seen as the most important pitching performance of the year.
