Run Prevention? More like Win Prevention as Mets pitching and defense betrays them in Seattle

Mariners 8 Mets 3 (T-Mobile Park, Seattle, WA)

Mets record: 26-35

Mets streak: Lost 2

WP - Logan Gilbert (4-4)

LP - Jonah Tong (1-1)

Seat on the Korner: Jhonny Pereda

We select a Star of the Game and virtually invite him to take his Seat on the Korner — just as Ralph Kiner did on WOR-TV Channel 9 during the early days of the New York Mets.

Continuing the tradition of Rheingold Beer sponsoring Kiner’s Korner, this season every seat is proudly presented by The Main Event Restaurant & Sports Bar.

With locations in Plainview and Farmingdale, The Main Event features 80+ HD TVs, fresh daily seafood, and Black Angus certified steaks—so you never have to choose between great food and the big game.

Jhonny Pereda's three run HR in the bottom of the 5th turned a manageable 4-2 game into a 7-2 killjoy. Pereda would wind up 2-for-4 with those three RBI.

Need to Know

  • The Mets have lost their last 7 games in Seattle with their last victory at T-Mobile Park coming in 2017.

  • Carson Benge's two home runs tonight were his 5th and 6th of the season, and it's the first multi-homer game of his career. He drove in all three Mets runs.

  • Jonah Tong gave up five runs on five hits and two walks in 3 and 1/3 innings tonight as the bulk guy.

  • Bo Bichette's 0-for-3 tonight gives him an 0-for-13 stretch at the plate.

  • The Mariners now have an 8-game win streak.

  • Logan Gilbert went 5 and 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out eight.

  • Julio Rodriguez's home run in the 6th was the first given up by Cionel Perez as a Met.

  • A.J. Minter pitched a scoreless 8th. Minter was the only Mets pitcher out of four to not give up a run.

Turning Point

Clang, clang, clang goes the defense. After Carson Benge's game tying two run homer in the third inning, the Mariners came right back and took advantage of some sloppy Mets defense. First, Marcus Semien had a line drive escape the webbing of his glove, only to see him throw away a ball that he had plenty of time to get the runner on.

Then right after that, Mark Vientos had one go off his glove to score Randy Arozarena. The Mariners would hold on to the lead for the rest of the game.

Can I say "run prevention?" is that allowed? Or has the statute of limitations run out on that?

Three Keys

Open Too Long

Huascar Brazoban started his fifth game of the year tonight. Coming in, he had a 4.15 ERA as a starter in that small sample size. But his one start where he gave up two runs as a starter followed the same path as tonight, as his runs were given up in the second inning when it would have been reasonable to take him out before Patrick Wisdom was sent to the plate. Instead ...

Brazoban's pitches caught too much of the plate in the second inning, and he paid for it.

Tong Torched

Jonah Tong was victimized by the terrible defense in the third inning, but then he just got flat hit hard in the 4th and 5th innings as he too fell victim to bad location. It was all capped off by Pereda's home run.

The Mariners hit three home runs tonight, giving them 21 in the last 8 games. But this was the one that hurt the most as Tong's battles with the long ball came back to bite him again this season after struggling with it during his stay in the minors this season.

The Carson Show

Carson Benge is showing great promise at the plate and in the field this season. Tonight's two home runs were just another step.

Unfortunately, the Mets couldn't turn that second home run into a springboard as later in the 6th inning, as Mark Vientos came up with two runners on, the tying run on deck, and against a new pitcher and hit the first pitch he saw for a 5-4-3 DP to basically end all hope.
