Solid Peterson Outing and Ortega Walk Off Squeeze Mets to Victory.

Mets 3 Angels 2 (Citi Field, Flushing NY)

Mets record: 60 -71

Mets streak: Won 1

WP - Adam Ottavino (1-4)

LP - Reynaldo Lopez (2-7)

Seat on the Korner: David Peterson

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Today's seat on the korner belongs to David Peterson, who had an incredible start today for the Mets, pitching 7 innings, striking out 8 (a tie for his season high), and only allowing 1 run on 3 hits. Peterson has been struggling this season, so it is good to see him turn it around in a start like today's.

Need to Know

  • The Mets just avoided their seventh sweep this season and for the first time in franchise history by the Angels.

  • The Mets are now 16-1 when their starting pitcher pitches 7 innings or more and are now 5-4 when tied after the 8th inning.

  • Francisco Lindor is 5th in the majors and 4th in the National League in WAR with a 5.2. Today, he went 1-4 with a single that continued his 13 game hitting streak where before today he batted .367 with 12 runs, 4 doubles and 2 home runs.

  • Shohei Ohtani went 0-4 today with 2 strikeouts.

Turning Point

The turning point of the game was in the bottom of the 8th when Pete Alonso hit a double that scored Francisco Lindor and tied the game.

From there, the Mets were able to keep the Angels from scoring and came in clutch with a walk off in the bottom of the 9th when Rafael Ortega hit a walk off single.

Three Keys

David Peterson: After having a bit of a struggle this season, David Peterson had a stellar start today, going 7 innings, only allowing 1 run on 3 hits with 8 strikeouts. Today's game tied Peterson's season high of 8 strikeouts in the majors.

Eduardo Escobar: Today was Eduardo Escobar's first game playing at Citi Field since being on the Mets. Escobar went 0-4 today with 2 strikeouts. The other night, they had a touching tribute to him that ended with Escobar singing "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston.

Escobar was a great energy for both the Mets and the Mets fan base. He was a star on the Mets social media with all of the fun questions they would ask, and he would always have a smile on his face. This tribute was truly touching which made me realize all of the fun that he had being on this team, with every video showing a smile on his face.

Pete Alonso: With his RBI today, Pete Alonso now has 96 RBIs and is 2nd in both the majors and the National League, right behind the Braves' Matt Olson. Pete is also looking to become the 5th player in MLB history with 3 or more seasons of 40+ home runs, joining the likes of big names such as Ralph Kiner and Albert Pujols.

Pete also made multiple diving stops in the past few games and some great heads up baseball, which we have seen many times from Pete in the past.

With these numbers, it is tough for the Mets to not offer Pete a contract, as he has proven time and time again that he is one of the biggest assets for this team, both offensively and defensively.
