The Yankees Won, The YANKEES WON: Celebrating 36 Years of John Sterling's Broadcasting Brilliance

Last night, the world of baseball broadcasting was shaken by the announcement of John Sterling's retirement. A legend behind the microphone, Sterling has been the voice of the New York Yankees for decades, weaving a rich tapestry of calls, catchphrases, and unforgettable moments that have become part of baseball lore.

While our website primarily celebrates the Hall of Famer and New York Mets broadcaster Ralph Kiner, as well as all things Mets, it's undeniable that John Sterling holds a special place in the hearts of our New York Yankee fan brethren.

Sterling's journey to becoming one of the most iconic voices in sports broadcasting began at Moravian College and continued through Boston University and Columbia University School of General Studies. His career started at a small radio station in Wellsville, New York, and from there, he climbed the ranks, serving as a play-by-play announcer for various teams and sports.

In a first-hand interview I conducted with John Sterling in 2017, he shared insights into his career, saying, "It's been a wonderful joyride. And you know what? It's better than ever. I'm very lucky that I love what I do." Reflecting on his long and illustrious career, Sterling expressed his gratitude for his work.

Sterling's distinctive voice has been a hallmark of his broadcasting style. When asked about it, he remarked, "Well, no, I mean, I'm just very lucky that I had those pipes when I was a little boy. And I didn't understand it." His voice, which he initially didn't like as a child, became his ticket to a fulfilling career in radio.

Throughout his career, Sterling has called countless memorable moments, from Derek Jeter's iconic plays to Mariano Rivera's legendary saves. Reflecting on his time with these legendary players, Sterling said, "The two players are more than special. I mean, they're extraordinary."

One of Sterling's trademarks is his unique home run calls, or "Sterlingisms," as they are affectionately known by fans. From "He sent a Tex message!”for Mark Teixeira to the more recent call for Aaron Judges 62nd Home Run. Sterling's creativity and wit have added a special flair to his broadcasts.

Despite some critics questioning his style, Sterling remained unfazed, saying, "I don't care. I don't watch, listen. I don't care." He continued to bring his passion for the game and his love for the Yankees to every broadcast, winning over countless fans in the process.

A significant part of John Sterling's broadcasting journey with the New York Yankees was his enduring partnership with Suzyn Waldman. Together, they formed a dynamic duo that brought both play-by-play excitement and insightful analysis to Yankees fans. As Sterling once said about their partnership, "Susan and I have been friends a long time, way before she came on the air with me. I knew it would work out great. She helps the broadcast inordinately." Their chemistry and camaraderie were palpable, making them a beloved pair in the broadcast booth. Waldman, with her deep knowledge of the game, added, "Susan Waldman has never done anything in her life that wasn't her best. She just has that drive and desire." This drive and dedication perfectly complemented Sterling's energetic and distinctive style. Their mutual respect and friendship extended beyond the microphone. Waldman's contributions to the broadcasts enriched the experience for listeners, adding depth and perspective to Sterling's calls. As Sterling reflected on their partnership, "I'm pretty smart about this business, and I listened to Susan. She helps the broadcast inordinately." Their partnership exemplified the best of sports broadcasting, combining professionalism with genuine passion for the game and the team they both loved.

When reflecting on his place in Yankee history, Sterling expressed gratitude and humility. "I was a Yankee fan when I was a little boy. And to think that I could become the Yankee broadcaster and have that length is utterly amazing," he said.

As John Sterling hangs up his microphone and steps away from the broadcast booth, he leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished by Yankees fans for generations to come. His passion, his voice, and his unforgettable calls will forever be part of the fabric of New York Yankees baseball.

So, as we bid farewell to John Sterling, let's remember and celebrate the great career of a broadcasting legend who has left an indelible mark on the world of sports. Thank you, John, for the memories, the calls, and the joy you've brought to Yankees fans everywhere.
