Seat on the Korner: Christian Scott

We select a Star of the Game and virtually invite him to take his Seat on the Korner — just as Ralph Kiner did on WOR-TV Channel 9 during the early days of the New York Mets.

Continuing the tradition of Rheingold Beer sponsoring Kiner’s Korner, this season every seat is proudly presented by The Main Event Restaurant & Sports Bar.

With locations in Plainview and Farmingdale, The Main Event features 80+ HD TVs, fresh daily seafood, and Black Angus certified steaks—so you never have to choose between great food and the big game.

Christian Scott showed a lot of maturity and a lot of toughness in a game he controlled from the moment he took the mound.

Scott started the game with no wins on the season, despite putting together some pretty good outings. With some great defense behind him and some great control, Scott struck out eight Marlins in his first 4 innings pitched.

The young right-hander had it all working, pumping the zone with strikes, and stayed tough when runners got on base.

Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing each made great catches in the bottom of the 4th and the bottom of the 5th innings, respectively, on deep fly balls to limit any rallies by the Marlins.

Scott pitched five innings; he struck out eight batters and only allowed five hits and one earned run. His ERA is now down below 3.00 at 2.97 for the season.

Turning Point

In the bottom of the 4th inning, the Mets stung the ball a couple of times. Jared Young Hit a single, moving Juan Soto (who had walked) to third base. His single registered an 111-mph exit velocity. It almost bounced past the center fielder on the way to the wall. The next batter, Mark Vientos, hit a 108 mph double off the left field wall to drive in both runners, giving the Mets the lead 2-0.

Marcus Semien drove in Vientos with a single after Ewing grounded out to the 3rd baseman.

His single only registered 89 mph, but it did the trick.

Three Keys

Bullish Bullpen

Cionel Pérez, a hard-throwing lefty making his first appearance for the Mets this season, came into the bottom of the 6th inning and pitched a 1-2-3 inning, which included his first strikeout as a Met. Pérez's velocity reached 96 mph, and he was mixing in some nice breaking pitches to frustrate the batters he faced.

Huascar Brazobán continued to be one of the most consistent arms for the Mets this season. He came into the bottom of the 7th inning and made quick work of the Marlins.

Brazobán faced three batters and struck each one of them out. His ERA this season is now down to 1.87.

Austin Warren pitched the bottom of the 8th, which had a shaky start after he allowed the first two runners to reach base. Warren stabilized and finished the inning with no runs allowed.

Devin Williams came in to shut the door in a rare non-save appearance. Williams retired the side 1-2-3.

Forever Young

Jared Young was smashing the ball with multiple 100+ mph hits. His first hit set the table for two runs in the bottom of the 4th. His second hit was a screaming line drive home run over the Cadillac Club in right field.

His torn meniscus has appeared to heal nicely, scoring from first base on a Vientos double in the bottom of the 4th.

Benge's Glove

Benge has dropped a few easy ones this year, but Ted Lasso would be proud of the young "goldfish, " whose memory has proven to be super short.

His running, jumping, and crashing catch in the bottom of the fourth saved a potential extra base hit and, even more importantly, may have snuffed a rally-to-be.

Kyle Stowers drove a deep shot to right field, and Benge seemed to have a great jump off the bat. He was in full stride when the ball got to him, when he jumped and reached up to snag the ball. He then crashed into the wall and fell backwards. The kid continues to impress.
