Seat on the Korner: Carlos Rodon
We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.
Today's Seat on the Korner belongs to Carlos Rodon, who picked up his first win as a Yankee tonight, going 5.2 innings, allowing 4 hits and 1 run. He also struck out 4 batters.
Need to Know
The Mets are now 11-8 in the month of July
Jose Quintana went 6 innings, giving up 2 earned runs, 6 hits and struck out 5 batters.
This was Quintana's second start this year against the Yankees, giving up a total of 4 runs in those starts.
Francisco Alvarez went 1-4 tonight, coming home on Brandon Nimmo's sac fly on the only run of the game for the Mets.
Francisco Lindor went 0-2 tonight with 2 walks.
The Mets are now 7 games below .500 and 17.5 games behind in the NL East.
Turning Point
The turning point of the game was after Brandon Nimmo's sacrifice fly that brought home the only run of the game for the Mets.
From there, the Mets would not score another run and would give up 1 more to the Yankees on an Anthony Volpe single.
Three Keys
Quintana: Jose Quintana, in his second start against the Yankees this season, went 6 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits with 5 strike outs, his ERA now goes up to 3.27 this season.
Even though the Mets did not get the victory, it seems as if Quintana is going to be a solid starter for the Mets. Being able to go that long while producing solid innings is key to what the Mets need, since their bullpen has been so tough this season.
The main issue for the Mets besides their bullpen is their offensive support. It seems as if in these key situations, the offense just goes dead like they did tonight. They were hitting hard outs and were not able to get that many hits with only 4.
Jeff McNeil: Even though his offense has been lacking, Jeff McNeil has been stellar on defense since bobbling the ball 3 times earlier on in the season.
Tonight, Jeff made 2 great catches in the outfield, including one that robbed Gleyber Torres of a homer.
Not only was Jeff great at defense tonight, but he also found himself in a bit of a situation with Yankees pitcher Carlos Rodon in the top of the 4th when he was hit by a fastball on the back. In response to this, McNeil threw his helmet in frustration. He walked to first base ok, and when asked about it after the game, the two of them seemed unfazed about it.
The Trade Deadline: The big question on everyone's mind is, what are the Mets going to do at the trade deadline? With the deadline coming up in a few days, the Mets need to act.
It was announced tonight just before the game ended that the Angles have taken Shohei Ohtani off of the trade market. For the time being, he will stay an Angel until his contract is up at the end of the season.
Even though Ohtani would be a great asset for the Mets, it may be just a little too unrealistic for the team.
One person I think the Mets should try to pursue is Pirates reliever David Bender. David is a solid reliever who will give the Mets what they need in tough games like tonights. He knows how to get out of sticky situations and can provide good depth for the Mets.
Finally, it is unknown what will happen to Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer. If they do get traded away before the deadline, I hope that good depth and good assets can come from those trades. They have been underperforming this year, and the Mets can certainly get great talent from them, that is if they act on it...
