Seat on the Korner:
We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.
Hard to believe that tonight's walk off dinger was the first in J.D. Martinez's career. But it was sorely needed to get the Mets a 3-2 victory to win the series against the lst place Marlins on Thursday.
Need to Know
The three hits off the Marlins were the least amount of hits they had given up all season.
Martinez had two of those hits, going 2-for-4 on the evening.
Luis Severino was a touch wild, walking in six innings, and gave up seven hits. But weaved in and out o ftrouble to only give up the one run on Jake Burger's solo homer in the 6th.
Roddery Munoz came into the game with a 5.95 ERA in four starts, but no-hit the Mets for 5 and 1/3, and wound up pitching six innings while just giving up one hit.
Edwin Diaz made his return from the IL and pitched a 1-2-3 inning.
Turning Point
Tanner Scott was asked to pitch the ninth inning with a 2-1 lead, just two days after a six out save. It was clear he wasn't right, as he led off the inning by walking Francisco Lindor. After striking out Brandon Nimmo, J.D. Martinez didn't let Scott off the hook.
Three Keys
Numbers
98, 97, 97, 97, 99, 99, 99 ...
Those were the mph on each of Edwin Diaz's fastballs tonight. Easily the most encouraging sign of the night.
The slider looked good too.
Getting Away With One
The fact that the Mets won is great, but after the Mets have been tearing the cover off the ball, it's baffling that it took the Mets until the ninth to grab a lead against a team being led by Roddery Munoz.
When the Mets loaded the bases in the bottom of the 7th with nobody out and only scored one run, it looked like the Mets reverted to the team that started the season in a team wide offensive funk. It'll be interesting to see if tonight was a mere blip or if the doldrums have returned.
But a win is a win, and as the kids say: That's baseball, Suzyn
Shallow Waters?
Starting with this Marlins series, the Mets are in a stretch of 31 games where 26 of them are against opponents with under .500 records. Three of the other ones are against the 37-35 Padres, and the other two are against the Yankees. Full disclosure: of the 26, three of them are against the reigning World Champs and three of them are against the percolating Houston Astros.
But there are plenty of games on the back end of this stretch against the Nationals, Pirates, and Rockies. So the opportunity is there for the Mets to claw back to .500 and stay in the race for WC3. If they had dropped 2-of-3 again to the Marlins, it would have been hard to envision them getting back into the race against the Big 12, let alone the Nationals, Pirates, and Rockies. But winning tonight's game and this series at least gives them a life preserver for the waters ahead.
