Seat on the Korner:
We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.
Today's seat for the second game of the doubleheader on the Korner belongs to Tyrone Taylor. As the Mets' fourth outfielder, Taylor had faced a challenging start to the season, hitting just 2-13 at the plate. However, Taylor seized the opportunity to rewrite his narrative.Following Pete Alonso's game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, the stage was set for Taylor to etch his name into Mets lore. After Brett Baty walked and advanced to scoring position on a Starling Marte sacrifice, Taylor found himself in a position to deliver his first career walk-off run batted in. Taylor squared up against Alex Faedo's pitch, driving it sharply down the third base line, securing the walk-off victory in dramatic fashion. In a single swing, he transformed the atmosphere of the stadium and etched his name in Mets history as his clutch hit not only sealed the win for the Mets but also marked a significant milestone for manager Carlos Mendoza, giving him his first victory at the major league level.
Need to Know

Through the first five games this season, Detroit relievers have given up just one run on seven hits with 28 strikeouts in 23.2 innings.
The Tigers enter the game at 5-0 and are the last remaining unbeaten team in the big leagues.
Javy Baez enters today's game batting .301/.348/.629 with six doubles, one triple, 13 home runs and 28 RBI in 41 games all time against the New York Mets he is 8 RBI shy of 600 career RBI.
Despite the Mets offensive struggles, Â Francisco Alvarez who is 8-19 (.421) with three runs, three doubles, one home run, four RBI and one walk through the first five games of the season he was not in the starting lineup.
After failing to make the roster out of spring training, Detroit Tigers' pitcher Matt Manning made it back to the big leagues as the 27th player to make a spot start in a doubleheader against the New York Mets.
Likewise José Buttó was called up from Triple-A Syracuse to start the second game of Thursday's doubleheader versus the Tigers, as the 27th man for the doubleheader. Buttó nearly won a rotation spot with a strong spring, allowing just one earned run in 10 innings. He permitted two earned runs over five innings in his first start with Triple-A Syracuse.
The Mets used every relief pitcher in the first game of the double header with the exception of Reed Garrett and Yohan RamÃrez.
Pete Alonso entered play still one RBI away from 500 for his career. He would become the 10th player in Mets history to record 500 RBI. The first game of the doubleheader was Alonso's 689th game as a Met; David Wright was the fastest Met to reach the plateau, driving in his 500th run in his 727 game. Wright is the Mets leader with five 100 RBI seasons. Alonso has three such seasons. Carlos Beltrán and Darryl Strawberry also recorded three seasons each. Alonso's 499 RBI since he entered the league in 2019 are the most in the major leagues
Turning Point
Undoubtedly, the pivotal moment in game two of the doubleheader hinged on the powerful swing of Pete Alonso's bat. With the Mets trailing and time running out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Alonso stepped up to the plate and delivered a game-tying home run that electrified the sparse crowd in the stadium and ignited the team's hopes for a comeback victory.
Alonso's clutch hit not only leveled the score but also marked a significant milestone in his career—the 500th run batted in. This achievement added an extra layer of significance to the moment, underscoring Alonso's impact as a consistent offensive threat and a driving force behind the Mets' success.. Alonso's timely heroics not only salvaged the game for the Mets but also was a key in Carlos Mendoza's first win as a manager.
Three Keys
UNLUCKY 13th
After 13 hitless innings Harrison Bader broke up the no-hitter in the 8th inning with a bleeding line drive. Zack Short pinch hit for Joey Wendle and sacrificed moving Bader to second. Brandon Nimmo then flied out , bringing the struggling 1-23 Francisco Lindor who struck out on 3 pitches, stranding the tying run at second base.
JOSE,JOSE,JOSE, REED IT AND AVOID SWEEP
Jose Butto provided the Mets with precisely what they needed—a strong start—following the exhaustion of six pitchers in game one of the doubleheader. Butto rose to the occasion, delivering a stellar performance over six innings. He allowed just three hits and one earned run while issuing three walks and recording six strikeouts. His command of the game kept the opposing team at bay, giving the Mets a solid foundation to build upon.Following Butto's impressive outing, Reed Garrett made his season debut and further bolstered the Mets' pitching prowess. In three stellar innings, Garrett held the opposing team scoreless, conceding only two hits and issuing one walk while striking out four batters. His precision and control on the mound showcased his readiness for the season ahead. Both Butto and Garrett's performances kept the Mets competitive, giving their offense the opportunity to shine in the final frame.
CARLOS : PUT IT IN THE BOOKS.
Carlos Mendoza has finally broken the streak, securing his inaugural win as manager for the Mets after six games. With this victory, Mendoza puts to rest any looming comparisons to Casey Stengel's infamous record of nine consecutive losses to start a season as a Mets manager in 1962.
The significance of this triumph extends beyond just a mark in the win column. For Mendoza, it marks a milestone in his managerial career and hopefully will serve as a foundation upon which to build momentum and establish a winning culture.
