Seat On The Korner: Gavin Stone
We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.
The Dodgers seem to have an endless pipeline of young pitching and Gavin Stone showcased his stuff in Game 2 of the doubleheader. Stone baffled the Mets over seven shutout innings, giving up just three hits and striking out seven to earn his fifth win of the season.
Need To Know
The Mets failed to pick up an extra-base hit or advance a runner into scoring position during the game.
Jose Quintana delivered a quality start, giving up just three runs in six innings of work while striking out three.
Freddie Freeman capped a strong doubleheader day by going 2-for-3 in the night cap to go 5-for-8 on the day with a double, a home run and three RBIs over the course of two games.
Miguel Vargas launched his first home run of the season for the Dodgers off Quintana in the sixth inning to cap the scoring.
The Dodgers have now secured at least a split of the season series with the Mets with a doubleheader sweep.
The Mets have now lost six consecutive series (counting the four-game series over two ballparks with Philadelphia as one series) and have dropped at least the first two games in each of them.
The Mets are now 11-24 since Francisco Alvarez hurt his thumb in Los Angeles back in mid-April.
Turning Point
With a quick turnaround between Games 1 and 2, a fast start by the Dodgers served as an extension of the feeling of woe the Mets ended game one with. Seeing Will Smith, who served as the DH in Game 2 after catching the opener, go deep right away put the Dodgers up 1-0 and delivered an early haymaker to a reeling Mets team that couldn't respond.
Three Keys
Third Base Decision Appears Imminent
The Mets have been playing without a backup middle infielder since promoting Mark Vientos to the big club a few weeks ago and there really hasn't been much of a competition offensively as Vientos has looked much more effective at the plate than Brett Baty. Defense has saved Baty but a pair of key fielding mistakes in Game 1 hurt his stock and manager Carlos Mendoza said after the game that the club could end the debate as soon as today. The fact that Francisco Lindor suffered a bruised finger on a bunt attempt in Game 1 may heighten the urgency to add another middle infielder to the roster, which could lead either Vientos or Baty back to Syracuse this afternoon.
Citi Field Takeover
Much has been made about the Mets' attendance woes at Citi Field this season, which has plummeted nearly 20 percent year to year. There were more fans in the seats yesterday but a lot of those tickets belonged to Dodgers fans, who were vocally loud during both games, starting "Let's Go Dodgers" and "Freddie" chants throughout. There have been plenty of alarm bells sounded in the media about lack of attendance at Mets' games but the front office can't be thrilled to see their building get taken over by visiting fans on a routine basis.
Quintana Delivers A Solid Effort
Lost in the latest Mets' offensive brownout was another solid start for Quintana, who delivered a quality start against the Dodgers and has gone at least five innings and allowed three runs or less in his past three starts. While the state of the Mets' rotation has him miscast as an ace, Quintana is doing essentially what he has for his entire career and deserves better than a 1-5 record. If Quintana keeps this performance up he will likely be a good candidate to get dealt at the deadline if the Mets continue to spiral out of control in the standings.
