Mets bounce back, beat Marlins thanks to Canha, Narvaez, and Alonso

Game 3 of 162

Mets 6 - Marlins 2 (Loan Depot Park, Miami)

Mets record: 2-1

Mets streak: Won 1

WP - Tylor Megill (1-0)

LP - Andrew Nardi (0-1)

Seat on the Korner:

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Mark Canha gets the seat today as player of the game. Canha went 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Canha doubled to lead off the second and came around to score the first run of the game. Then he led off the 4th with a walk and scored again. Then in the 5th, he singled home Pete Alonso to give the Mets a 4-2 lead. The final blow was a solo HR in the 7th to provide the dagger.

Need to Know

  • Tylor Megill slogged through five innings but settled in as the game went along, giving up six hits (including a long home run to Nick Fortes), and two walks ... but he struck out 7 hitters and got out of jam after jam after jam, including getting getting Bryan De La Cruz to ground out to deep short with runners on second and third with a two run lead.

  • The bullpen was stellar in picking up for Megill. Danny Santana struck out two in a clean inning for his Mets debut. Drew Smith and Brooks Raley combined to take care of the 7th. Adam Ottavino worked out of trouble in the 8th, and David Robertson finished it off in the 9th.

  • The Mets were a little anxious chasing Edward Cabrera's changeups. Cabrera had 6 walks in four innings, and probably should have had more, but he got Daniel Vogelbach and Francisco Lindor to chase in RBI situations.

  • Luis Arraez's efforts were in vain for the Marlins, going 4-for-5 to send his batting average to .583.

  • In the 7th inning, Pete Alonso grounded out to lead off the 7th. Replay showed that Garrett Cooper's foot was clearly off the base, but the replay room did not agree with their own replay, and Alonso inexplicably remained out.

  • Tommy Pham singled in the 9th for his first hit as a Met.

  • Eduardo Escobar went 0-for-5 to bring his average down to .083 ... The cries for Brett Baty will grow louder as he hit two home runs for Syracuse today, including a grand slam.

Turning Point

My vote is for Jeff McNeil's pop fly double to lead off the top of the 5th. De La Cruz, Joey Wendle and Jean Segura chased McNeil's pop up to no avail, and it opened the floodgates. Pete Alonso followed with a double to give the Mets the lead for good at 3-2, and then Canha would single Alonso home to make it 4-2.

Three Keys

Omar Narvaez went 2-for-4 and drove in Canha twice with a sac fly in the 2nd and a single in the 4th.

Pete Alonso reached base four times (and it should have been five), with two hits and two walks, coming around to score twice.

Starling Marte started the game on the bench, but gave the Mets some insurance with a pinch hit double to right center to drive in the 6th run of the game.
