Seat On The Korner:
We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.
Today's Seat On The Korner goes to Mets' starting pitcher David Peterson, who celebrated his 29th birthday in style. Peterson dominated a strong Red Sox lineup all night, allowing one run over six innings of work to improve to 9-1 on the season while setting a career-high with 11 strikeouts. The Mets improved to 14-3 in games Peterson has started this season and he lowered his ERA to 2.75 in the process.
Need To Know
The Mets secured their first series victory over the Red Sox since 2009 and their first at home against Boston since taking two out of three back in 2001 at Shea Stadium.
Mets' pitchers struck out 15 batters tonight, tying a season-high for a single game.
Francisco Lindor launched his 30th home run in the third inning, a two-run shot to extend his hitting streak to 15 games and his on-base streak to 32 games.
Lindor has now hit 30 home runs in a season five times in his career, joining Alex Rodriguez as the only shortstops to accomplish that feat.
The Mets remain one half-game back of the final Wild Card spot in the National League after the Atlanta Braves shut out the Colorado Rockies 3-0 at Truist Park.
Mets' starting pitchers have not yielded a home run in five consecutive games.
Starting pitcher Paul Blackburn pitched a rehab start for AAA Syracuse tonight, allowing just one run on four hits in 6.2 innings while tossing 75 pitches, and appears to be on track to return from the injured list during the Mets' next turn through the rotation.
Turning Point
The Red Sox were threatening in the eighth inning, loading the bases with no one out against the combo platter of Jose Butto and Reed Garrett. While Boston got a run on a sacrifice fly, Garrett induced a massive inning-ending double play to limit the damage and give the Mets a chance to extend their lead, which they did with four runs in the bottom of the frame.
Three Keys
Boosting His Case For MVP
The buzz surrounding Lindor's MVP candidacy continued to pick up after another clutch night at the plate for the Mets' star shortstop, who went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and three RBI. Lindor has been getting serenaded with MVP chants from the Citi Field faithful and his clutch performances have helped keep the Mets in the playoff hunt.
A Clean-Shaven Polar Bear
Pete Alonso, who has been sporting a mustache for a significant portion of the year, shaved it prior to the game and joked when asked about that choice that the mustache had no hits in it. The razor apparently had a massive hit in it as Alonso crushed a two-run blast to left-center in the eighth to deliver the final blow of the night. The homer was Alonso's 31st of the year and came as part of a two-hit night, perhaps adding a new character to the Mets' wild year in the form of a clean-shaven Polar Bear.
Setting Up A Playoff Rotation?
The Mets have gotten tremendous starting pitching over the past three days from Peterson, Sean Manaea and Luis Severino, who have given them consistent length and quality over the past two months. That trio is tentatively lined up to pitch the three-game series in Atlanta later this month that could determine the Mets' season and it would certainly appear as if those three would be the playoff starters if the Mets reach the postseason. While no one would have expected these three to be the team's best starters, the Mets have a strong trio that is clicking on all cylinders and that could make them a dangerous out in October if they get in.
