Seat on the Korner: Francisco Alvarez

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Mets Catcher Francisco Alvarez continues to rake, going 16-for-31 in his last 31 at-bats and extending his hitting streak to nine games. Tonight, he earned a seat on the Korner by driving in three runs, including a two-run home run in the third inning and an RBI double in the fifth inning just prior to the hour and twenty seven minute rain delay. Alvarez is now batting .313 on the season on the strength of his 3 for 3 night.

Turning Point

After the Mets took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning, the Yankees seemed poised for a comeback in the top of the 4th. Aaron Judge led off the inning with a single on a ground ball to left fielder Brandon Nimmo. The newly acquired J.D. Davis, a former Met, then walked, advancing Judge to second. With the tying run at the plate, Alex Verdugo stepped up, but Sean Manaea induced him to ground into a crucial double play, from shortstop Francisco Lindor to first baseman Pete Alonso. Judge moved to third, but Davis was out at second and Verdugo at first. The Yankees' hopes dimmed further as DJ LeMahieu flied out to center fielder Harrison Bader, leaving Judge stranded at third and preserving the Mets' 3-0 lead. This pivotal moment thwarted the Yankees' rally and underscored the Mets' timely defensive prowess.

Three Keys

OMG..Cue the Apple, Cue the Song.

With Francisco Alvarez's third-inning home run , Tyrone Taylor's sixth inning, and Harrison Bader's 7th inning shot, the Mets have homered in ten straight games, hitting 24 home runs during that span. This is their longest streak of the season and their longest since a nine-game streak from August 14-22, 2023. The last time the Mets had a longer streak was an 11-game span from June 27-July 8, 2023. The Mets have hit 36 home runs this month, the fourth-most in the majors. The team celebrates home runs by playing Jose Iglesias's upcoming song "OMG" and performing his signature dance move in the dugout.

.500

With tonight's win, the Mets have moved back to a .500 record for the first time since they were 18-18 following a victory on May 7. This marks a significant turnaround for the team, as last season the latest they managed to maintain a .500 or above record was on June 4, when they stood at 30-30. The Mets' recent performance indicates a promising shift in momentum, providing hope for a more consistent and competitive season ahead as they battle for a wild card berth.

Taking the 5th

In the fifth inning, the Mets extended their lead by tacking on four more runs to open up a commanding 7-0 advantage. The rally began with a walk to Brandon Nimmo, followed by a flyout from J.D. Martinez. Pete Alonso then drew another walk, pushing Nimmo to second. Francisco Alvarez delivered a clutch double to right fielder Juan Soto, scoring Nimmo and moving Alonso to third. Play was then halted due to a torrential downpour, resulting in a rain delay that lasted one hour and twenty-seven minutes. When play resumed, the Yankees made a pitching change, with Caleb Ferguson replacing Luis Gil. The Mets continued to capitalize as Tyrone Taylor walked, loading the bases. Mark Vientos also walked, bringing Alonso home and keeping the bases loaded. Francisco Alvarez scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeff McNeil, and Taylor advanced to third. Harrison Bader then doubled to right field, driving in Taylor and pushing Vientos to third. The inning finally ended when Francisco Lindor popped out to second baseman Oswaldo Cabrera, but not before the Mets had solidified their lead at 7-0.
