Left hander Jesus Luzardo continued to be a problem for the Mets as he tossed 6.2 scoreless innings to lead the Phillies to a 7-1 win Sunday night at Citizens Bank Park. The Mets struggles continued as they have now lost 8 of their last 9 games.

Need to Know

  • With the loss, the Mets fell one game back of the Phillies for first place in the NL East.

  • Mets are 1-5 in a stretch of 10 straight games vs. NL East teams. Mets are 13-9 vs. NL East teams this season.

  • Despite going 0 for 2 with a walk, Juan Soto is slashing .328/.483/.687 with 18 runs, three doubles, seven home runs, 14 RBI, 21 walks and one stolen base in 20 games in June.

  • David Peterson made his 100th career start, becoming the 11th left handed Met pitcher to reach the milestone.

  • This was Peterson's seventh start on the road. Before this start, Peterson had made six quality starts on the road. Mets are 1-6 in Peterson's seven road starts, 8-0 at Citifield.

  • Mets are 0-4-1 in their last five series at Citizens Bank Park. Mets have not won a series in Philadelphia since August 19-21, 2022 when they took three of four.

  • Francisco Lindor hit a solo home run in the eighth inning (his second in two days) to spoil the shutout. The Mets streak of winning their last 28 games when Lindor homers was snapped. It was one shy of tying the all-time record of 29 set by the Brooklyn Dodgers' Carl Furillo (1951-1953). The stat courtesy of Sarah Langs.

  • The Phillies had runners on first and second and nobody out when Peterson and Lindor combined to pick off Edmundo Sosa at second base in the bottom of the third inning. It was Peterson's 17th career pick off, moving him past Bobby Ojeda for the eighth most by a Mets pitcher. Ron Darling (41), Jerry Koosman (36), Dwight Gooden (32), Al Leiter (28), Jon Matlack (24), Mike Scott (20), and Sid Fernandez (18) are the seven pitchers ahead of Peterson for the most career pick offs in Mets' franchise history.

  • Earlier in the day, the Mets optioned catcher Francisco Alvarez to Triple-A Syracuse. Catcher Hayden Senger has been recalled from Triple-A Syracuse. Alvarez has struggled this season. The 23-year-old, who underwent surgery in spring training for a fractured hamate bone in his left hand, has slashed .236/.319/.333 with an OPS of .652 with three home runs and 11 RBI in 35 games. Senger pinch-hit for Soto in the ninth inning and struck out.

Turning Point

Peterson held the Phillies scoreless through the first three innings but Kyle Schwarber, who had been 1 for 19 with 12 strikeouts against the Mets left hander, drove a 1-2 pitch over the center field wall to snap a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth. Peterson had gone 49.1 IP without giving up a HR before Schwarber took him deep. Things unraveled from there as the Phillies sent 10 men to the plate and scored five runs, capped off by a three-run home run by Edmundo Sosa.

Three Keys

Luzardo's Mets Mastery

Phillies starter Jesus Luzardo made his 9th career start vs. the Mets. The left hander blanked the Mets on three hits with a walk and seven strikeouts over 6.2 IP. Luzardo continues to confound the Mets as he improved to 5-2 with a 2.63 ERA in his career against the boys from Queens. Pete Alonso is 0 for his last 22 against Luzardo and is now 2 for 25 (.080) with 12 strikeouts in his career against the Phillies southpaw.

Peterson's Off Day

Peterson had his worst outing of the season. The Mets left hander gave up a season high five earned runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts in four innings pitched. Peterson made his 11th career start vs. Philadelphia and is now 1-4 with a 5.27 ERA. In two career post season appearances against the Phillies last season, Peterson is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA (5.1 IP, 0R, 3H, 3BB, 2K). Peterson tied a season high by giving up two home runs. The only other time that Peterson gave up two home runs in a game this season was in his first start of the season against the Marlins on March 31st, a 10-4 win at Miami.

Sosa Power -- Edmundo, not Sammy -- Leads the Phils' Attack

Edmundo Sosa had three hits including a home run, a double with three runs batted in and was a triple shy of the cycle to key a 10-hit attack. Trea Turner, Schwarber and Nick Castellanos had two hits apiece.
