Stunning Nimmo Catch and Alonso Home Run Leads to Quintana's First Win as a Met

Mets 4 Cardinals 2 (Busch Stadium, St. Louis MO)

Mets record: 56-66

Mets streak: Won 2

WP - Jose Quintana (1-4)

LP - Adam Wainwright

S - Trevor Gott (1)

Seat on the Korner: Jose Quintana

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Tonights Seat on the Korner goes to Jose Quintana who picked up his first win in a Mets uniform, in familiar territory. Tonight, Quintana went 6 innings, allowing 3 hits, 2 earned runs and 4 walks. Quintana also struck out 5 batters. This continues Quintana's good stretch as a Met, as he finally got support from the offense and was able to pick up a win against his old team.

Buck showed his support of Jose tonight, calling him "kind of a throwback":

Need to Know

  • Today was the first of a 7 game road trip the Mets will encounter, facing 3 more games against St. Louis and then heading to Atlanta for a 3 game stretch.

  • The Mets' one error tonight came from a missed catch by Pete Alonso.

  • The Mets are now 36-10 when their starter throws at least 6.0 innings.

  • Francisco Lindor is playing very well in his last 49 games, batting .292, including an RBI double tonight in the top of the 5th inning. His WAR (Wins Above Replacement) is also 4.5, which is the 13th best in the majors and the 6th best in the NL.

Turning Point

Tonight's turning point of the game came in the top of the 4th inning when Pete Alonso crushed his 37th home run of the season to drive in 2 runs.

From there, the Mets were able to score 3 more runs due to a double from Francisco Lindor and from Tim Lacastro's first home run of the season. They were also able to keep the Cardinals away from taking a lead, only allowing 2 runs off of a home run from Tyler O'Neill and from a sac fly from Alec Burleson. However, plenty of men were allowed on base.

Three Keys

Walk this Way: Giving up walks have been a struggle as of late for the Mets pitching. In the past three games, the Mets walked a whopping 20 batters. 10 of which coming from Tuesday's loss against the Pirates.

The Mets are 27th in the league this season in walks with a total of 453. The only teams that have given up more are the Angles, White Sox and the Athletics, respectively.

The Youngins: Some of the newer Mets have been great for the offense as of late, such as players like Jonathan Arauz and DJ Stewart. DJ Stewart is on a 2 game hitting streak with 3 home runs, driving in 5 RBIs during that streak, while Jonathan Arauz has been great defensively at third base and homered in consecutive games for the first time in his career August 14th and 15th.

The Veterans: The Mets' veterans have been heating up as well, including the likes of Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo. Brandon Nimmo continued his hit streak tonight, now making it nine consecutive games with a hit as he went 2-4 tonight. He also made a stellar catch in left tonight:

Pete Alonso has been powerful as of late, homering in consecutive games to add up his total on the season to 37. Pete is now 3rd in the MLB and 2nd in the NL in home runs. Pete also passed Keith Hernandez on the Mets' all time RBI list now with 471 all time. Time to give this man a contract!

Finally, Francisco Lindor has been great at the plate as well. Adding another game to his hitting streak, he now has hits in 4 consecutive games with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs. He now has 5 doubles and 11 RBIs in his last 18 games.
