Seat on the Korner: Luis Torrens

We select a Star of the Game and virtually invite him to take his Seat on the Korner — just as Ralph Kiner did on WOR-TV Channel 9 during the early days of the New York Mets.

Continuing the tradition of Rheingold Beer sponsoring Kiner’s Korner, this season every seat is proudly presented by The Main Event Restaurant & Sports Bar.

With locations in Plainview and Farmingdale, The Main Event features 80+ HD TVs, fresh daily seafood, and Black Angus certified steaks—so you never have to choose between great food and the big game.

Torrens is in the game for his defensive abilities, so when he's hitting well, it's all gravy.

The catcher started his day at the plate with a double deep to right-center. The shot came on the 8th pitch of his at-bat off of pitcher Michael King. Torrens would later score on a triple by the recently hot Bo Bichette.

In the top of the 5th inning, Brett Baty singled into centerfield and set the table for another clutch at-bat by Torrens.

On a 2-0 count, Torrens crushed a middle-middle pitch over the centerfield wall for a 2-run homer. The HR was his first of the season.

Torrens's .235 average doesn't tell the whole story about how clutch he's been for the Mets. He has 13 RBI with runners in scoring position this season.

Need to Know

  • Luke Weaver had not allowed a run over his last 14 appearances. He is now 2-1 with a 2.57 ERA.

  • Bo Bichette has six hits in the last 2 games.

  • Coming into the game, Juan Soto had safely reached in 17 of his last 18 games...He is batting .338 (23-68) in that span with 17 runs, nine homers, 18 RBI, nine walks, five steals, a .416 OBP, .735 SLG, and a 1.151 OPS.

  • Over his last nine games, Carson Benge is batting .286 (10-35) with six runs, two doubles, three homers, seven RBI, three walks, one steal, a .375 OBP, and a .600 SLG.

Turning Point

The Turning Point for this game could easily evolve into the turning point for the Mets' season, if it continues in the right direction.

Bo Bichette's RBI triple in the top of the 3rd inning scored Torrens from 2nd base, after Torrens hit a bomb to right-center.

Bichette decided to take 3rd base on the play after Tatis misplayed the bounce of the wall in foul territory in right field.

The season could look a lot different at this point if Bichette had been hitting this entire time.

The triple put the Mets up 2-0, and they cruised for the rest of the game.

Three Keys

Great Scott!

Christian Scott continued his stellar pitching for the Mets, earning his second career victory. The kid pitched 5 2/3 innings and only gave up 3 hits, with no runs scored.

Scott's season stats include an impressive 2.52 ERA in 35.2 innings pitched in eight starts.

Since Clay Holmes went down with a broken leg, Scott has pitched lights out for the Mets, going more than 5 innings in his last two starts.

Friars Fried Offense

The Padres' anemic offense continued on Friday night. They only mustered up 3 hits, with no runs, and had only one runner past first base the entire evening.

The Padres ranked last in the Majors in runs scored and batting average. On Tuesday, they waved Nick Castellanos since he wasn't producing off the bench as they had hoped, but even their superstars haven't been producing this year.

Fernando Tatis has yet to hit a home run this season.

Manny Machado is batting only .176 this season so far.

Feeling Young Again

Jared Young continues to scorch the ball for the NY Mets.

Young was 2-4 and could have been 3-4, after hitting a line drive straight to the shortstop in his 3rd at-bat.

Young is batting .313 with a .945 OPS so far this year.

His 2nd inning home run measured 412 feet and registered a 111 mph exit velocity.
