Mets 3 Padres 2 (Citi Field, Flushing, NY)
Mets record: 31-37
Mets streak: Won 3
WP - Sean Manaea (4-3)
LP - Matt Waldron (4-6)
SV - Edwin Diaz (6)
Seat on the Korner:
We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.
This was a major step for Edwin Diaz. His first save since May 6th came on a back to back appearance, striking out two in the 9th to seal a 2-1 Mets victory on Friday night.
Need to Know
J.D. Martinez was the offensive hero for the second night in a row, driving in the only two runs for the Mets with a two run double in the third.
The bullpen as a whole for the Mets was excellent, going four innings, giving up one hit and striking out five.
Sean Manaea also put on a good performance, going five innings, striking out seven and giving up four hits and one walk.
Brandon Nimmo went 2-for-3 out of the two hole, and scored ahead of Martinez's double.
Padres starter Matt Waldron, who features a knuckleball, went seven innings while only giving up three hits and two walks while striking out two, only giving up the two runs on Martinez's double
The game was delayed 65 minutes due to rain off the bat.
Turning Point
With the score 2-1 in the top of the 6th, Adam Ottavino replaced Sean Manaea after he gave up a leadoff single to Luis Arraez. Arraez then tried to steal second against Ottavino, which was prety much an automatic extra base last season. However ...
Ottavino the finished the 6th with no problem.
Three Keys
Sound the Trumpets
Not only is Diaz's outing a key to the game, it could be a key to the entire season. To go on back to back days and look that good when his injury stint wasn't that long ago is a huge development for the rest of the year. His fastball didn't suffer for having pitched last night (he hit 100 against Manny Machado), and his slider was sharp, as you can see on the final out.
He Got a Little Help From His Friends
We should discuss the second out in the ninth a little bit, because the game was inches from being a tie game had it not been for the efforts of one Jeff McNeil.
The crowd being so silent during the ninth told you how huge this inning was. A few inches to Jeff's left and the night feels so much different, even if it had ended in a Mets victory.
Don't Forget The Rest of the Bullpen
We mentioned Ottavino and Diekman. But let's also not forget Sean Reid-Foley, who pitched a clean eighth against 9-1-2 in the Padres order, and striking out Fernando Tatis Jr. to finish it off.
