Seat on the Korner:

We select the star of the game and virtually invite him to a Seat on the Korner, just as Ralph Kiner used to do for his studio postgame show on WOR-channel 9 broadcasts in the early decades of the Mets.

Josiah Gray entered the game sporting an 0-4 record and 3.74 era, he held the Mets to 4 hits and struck out 9 over 6 innings. He struck out Starling Marte with the bases loaded in the 5th inning as the Nationals were clinging to a 2-0 lead.

Need to Know

  • Jose Butto lasted only 4 2/3 innings, giving up only four hits including a second inning home run to Nationals catcher Keibert Ruiz, walking six. Butto threw 93 pitches only 46 were strikes, Butto was behind on most batters which seemed to effect the Mets normally solid defense.

  • New York went 14-5 against D.C. last year including 7-2 at Citi Field...The Mets posted a 2.68 ERA against Washington in 2022, while batting .291/.366/.460...The team's 2.68 ERA was the lowest against any team within the division..

  • Dom Smith made his return to Citi Field for the first time as an opposing player and went 1 for 4 and reached on a base on balls. The Mets played a tribute video for Dom as the game began.

  • Since April 10, Former Mets bullpen coach Ricky Bones' has the Nationals bullpen leading the National League in ERA (1.93)...They are currently third in the National League, trailing only division rivals New York (NL) and Miami in opponents average (.191).

Turning Point

The game was a bit of a slog through 5 innings yet somehow even with somewhat sloppy play 10 Nationals baserunners, the Mets had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the 5th as Starling Marte came to the plate with the bases loaded and after working the count full struck out stranding 3 base runners, The Nats would put up a 3 spot in the top of the 6th to put the game away.

Three Keys

The Nationals held the Mets to just five hits — only one after the fifth inning — and were silenced by New Rochelle native Josiah Gray, who struck out nine in six scoreless innings.

After Starling Marte struck out with the bases loaded, the Mets failed to put a runner in scoring position. Gray and righty Mason Thompson faced the minimum amount of batters from the sixth through the ninth.

Jimmy Yacabonis, a New Jersey native made his home debut as a Met, His defense let him down in the 6th inning, with one out and a runner on first,Nationals Left Fielder, Alex Call, hit a ball up the middle that looked like a routine inning ending double-play . But second baseman Luis Guillorme misread the ball off the bat and broke up the middle, only for the ball to bounce off the mound and toward right field, Yacabonis, had to then face five more batters and the Nationals tacked on 3 runs to push the lead to 5-0.
