May wasn't quite as strong as April was for the New York Mets, but they did still post a winning record for the month by going 15-12 in 27 games. While Brett Baty did make a strong impact upon his return to the majors, hitting .290 with five home runs and 16 RBI, the reason that the Mets were able to be consistent winners in May was due to their pitching.
The starters delivered good efforts as Kodai Senga (3-2, 1.89 ERA in six starts), David Peterson (2-1, 2.30 ERA in five starts) and Clay Holmes (2-2, 3.34 ERA in five starts) all kept up their strong starts to the year. The bullpen also got good work from Huascar Brazoban (2-1, 1.26 ERA in nine appearances), Ryne Stanek (1.04 ERA in 10 appearances) and Reed Garrett (1-0 with a 1.38 ERA and two saves in 13 appearances), but the best player the Mets had in May was closer Edwin Diaz.

Diaz was unhittable throughout the month, pitching to a 0.00 ERA in 11 appearances and surrendering just three hits, none of which came after May 5th. Opponents struck out 14 times against Diaz, who worked 11.1 innings and picked up five saves to become the glue that held together what has been an elite bullpen thus far for New York.
The Mets have grand designs for this season and a dominant Diaz will be key to making those dreams a reality. Seeing Diaz be as dominant as he was in May was a very important development for the Mets this season.
