Seat on the Korner: Chase Dollander
We select a Star of the Game and virtually invite him to take his Seat on the Korner — just as Ralph Kiner did on WOR-TV Channel 9 during the early days of the New York Mets.
Continuing the tradition of Rheingold Beer sponsoring Kiner’s Korner, this season every seat is proudly presented by The Main Event Restaurant & Sports Bar.
With locations in Plainview and Farmingdale, The Main Event features 80+ HD TVs, fresh daily seafood, and Black Angus certified steaks—so you never have to choose between great food and the big game.

Rockies pitcher Chase Dollander made his second career start against the Mets and tossed seven scoreless innings. The Mets pounded Dollander last season for 5 earned runs in 3 IP in a 13-5 win at Coors Field. This was Dollander's first start of the season after making six appearances out of the bullpen. Dollander led all relievers with 25 IP and 32 strikeouts out of the pen.
Need to Know
The Mets played their 37th doubleheader since 2021, the most in the majors. The Mets have not swept a doubleheader since May 21st, 2023 when they swept the Cleveland Guardians at Citi. The last time they were swept in a doubleheader was last July against the Orioles in Baltimore.
The last time the Rockies won a doubleheader on the road was April 14th, 2011 when they swept the Mets at Citi Field.
The Mets scored four runs in the three-game series and were shut out for the fifth time this season.
The Mets have now scored four runs or less in 18 of 28 games, two runs or fewer in 14 of those games.
The Mets were 1 for 11 with RISP in the doubleheader and are now hitting .232 (51 for 120) with RISP this season.
34-year old right hander Carl Edwards Jr. made his Mets debut and pitched 3.1 scoreless innings.
The Mets bullpen gave up one run in 10.1 IP in the doubleheader.
After the game, the Mets DFA'd outfirlder Tommy Pham. The veteran outfielder was 0-for-the-season in 12 MLB at-bats.
Turning Point
Kodai Senga taking the mound was the turning point. Senga is an absolute mess. Coming into the game, Senga had given up 13 earned runs in six innings pitched. Things did not get any better in this one, as the right-hander gave up three runs on three hits in 2.2 IP before he was lifted. Senga, who was on a short leash, gave up his fifth home run of the season and saw his ERA rise to 9.00 (20 ER in 20 IP). With the way the Mets offense has produced of late, a one-run deficit feels like six or seven.
Three Keys
First Depressions
The Mets are using inexperienced first basemen and that is leading to mistakes at a key position. In the opener, the Rockies had runners on first and second and no one out. T.J. Rumfield hit a grounder to first baseman Mark Vientos. Instead of taking a step to create an angle for a throw, Vientos spun around and fired a throw that hit the runner going to second. Vientos was charged with an error and the failure to get the force out at second eventually led to an unearned run against Nolan McLean.
In the nitecap, first baseman Brett Baty fielded a grounder right at the first base bag. Baty stepped on the bag and then made an ill-advised throw to second, wide of the bag for a throwing error.
I Got No Power, Captain
The Mets have hit 20 home runs in 28 games. Francisco Alvarez leads the team with four. Five other Mets have two apiece. Only two players have more than ten runs batted in. Bo Bichette and Brett Baty lead the team with 12 apiece. Marcus Semien was 1 for 12 in the three game series. Baty was 0 for 7, Bichette 1 for 7 on the day.
Is this the endy for Mendy?
Mets Manager Carlos Mendoza's job was already on the line heading into the season. There were chants of "Fire Mendoza" from the frustrated Met fans throughout the second game of the doubleheader. The players have tried to hold themselves accountable for this dismal start to the season. With the Red Sox having fired Alex Cora after a 10-17 start, you have to wonder if David Stearns will pull the plug on Mendoza after this 9-19 start.
