The final month of the 2025 season is one that fans of the New York Mets will be eager to forget. Despite having a nearly 97 percent chance of reaching the postseason on September 5th, the Mets limped down the stretch and were caught in a slow speed chase by the Cincinnati Reds, who beat them out for the final playoff spot in the National League thanks to a victory in the season series.
The collapse was hard to explain because the Mets did get some solid offensive performances from the likes of Pete Alonso (.293 batting average with 7 home runs and 16 RBI with a .921 OPS), Francisco Lindor (.261/5/10 with a .900 OPS), and Brett Baty (.271/3/9 with a .755 OPS). The pitching standouts were closer Edwin Diaz, who pitched to a 0.61 ERA while striking out 19 batters in 14.1 innings pitched along with rookie starter Nolan McLean (2-1 with a 2.93 ERA in five starts, striking out 36 batters in 27.2 innings pitched) and veteran Clay Holmes (1-2 with a 3.09 ERA in six appearances, including a clutch six shutout innings on Saturday to keep the Mets' postseason hopes alive).

In the end, however, the Mets' $765 million man earned his keep in September as Juan Soto closes out the Met of the Month awards for 2025 with his second of the season. Soto was dynamic offensively, hitting .309 with eight home runs, 21 RBI, 12 stolen bases and a 1.022 OPS. The month closed out a brilliant first season in Queens for Soto, who set new career highs in home runs (43) and stolen bases (38), coming just two bags shy of an unprecedented 40-40 campaign after having never stolen more than 12 bases in a season prior.
The good news for the Mets is that Soto is just 26 years old and feels fully comfortable in Flushing, which is a scary sign for the rest of the league. With Soto and Lindor in the fold as the anchors of their lineup, the Mets have completed one of the hardest tasks of team building, pairing generational superstars. As long as David Stearns is able to put the right supporting pieces around them a World Series crown should arrive at some point during Soto's run in Queens.
