Mike's Met Of The Month, September 2026: A.J. Ewing
What may go down as one of the most frustrating New York Mets' seasons in a while is finally over. September saw the Mets play inconsistent baseball, resulting in their first last place finish since 2003, but they did find some key voices to aid in their potential turnaround by making Andy Green their permanent manager while adding former Twins' President Of Baseball Operations Derek Falvey to their front office.
The play on the field was nothing to write home about as most of the Mets' pitching accolades came from their bullpen as Dedniel Nunez (1.04 ERA in 8.2 innings pitched), Tobias Myers (1.17 ERA in 7.2 innings pitched) and Daniel Duarte (1.80 ERA in 5.0 innings pitched) boosted their chances of contributing to the 2027 roster. Both Brett Baty (.333 batting average with 3 home runs, 16 RBI and a 1.025 OPS in 51 at-bats) and Carson Benge (.313/4/11 with an .874 OPS in 96 at-bats) finished strong, but the final Met of the Month award goes to fellow rookie outfielder A.J. Ewing.
After enduring a tough slump at the end of August, Ewing showed impressive form by rebounding to finish strong in September. Over the course of 81 at-bats Ewing batted .309 with four home runs, 15 RBI and three stolen bases while posting an .862 OPS. Green gave Ewing some tough love, dropping him from the leadoff spot as a result of his struggles, but gave him a chance to figure things out in a lower spot in the batting order.
The fact that Ewing was able to demonstrate such resolve as a 22-year old is a good sign for the Mets' future. Ewing, like Benge before him, was able to avoid having a bit of adversity torpedo his season, which is something that previous generations of Mets' prospects haven't shown the ability to do frequently in recent years. While a lot of this fan base can be rightly critical of some of David Stearns' front office decisions, particularly in terms of big league acquisitions, you cannot deny the impact his regime has had in terms of player development.
